We recently had the chance to connect with Chase Fleischman and have shared our conversation below.
Chase, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What battle are you avoiding?
Anything political at this point. Some of my work features political influences or themes but I don’t have the energy to argue with people about any of it. Like it, don’t like it, it is what it is.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chase Fleischman and I’m an artist from Dallas, TX. I typically work with acrylic paint but also illustrate and have created digital designs for apparel, etc. My work usually focuses on retro sci-fi themes, robots, particularly, but I also like to paint surrealism and musical themed pieces as well.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I could be an astronaut. As it turns out, that shit is hard.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I think when there’s periods of draught (no exhibitions/shows on the calendar, lack of sales, etc.) it’s easy to get discouraged. I’ve never felt like I wanted to give up art entirely though. The overall process of creating new paintings is therapeutic for me from start-to-finish so it’s important to focus on that sometimes when other things don’t appear to be going as smoothly.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Freedom of expression, I guess. Without that, what’s the point of creating anything meaningful.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m creating art or music.
