Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Kay Sharkey.
Alexa Kay, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as a creative professional.
Growing up I spent a lot of time organizing and planning. Whether it was parties and outings with my friends or color coordinating my drawers and closets. I felt most satisfied, and the least stressed when my life was orderly, and I could check things off my list. When my friends started getting married, I naturally helped them out with the planning by checking their timelines or helping to think of details they may have missed. As I became more involved, I realized this was something I was really good at, and it became a passion of mine. After college, I took a job as a marketing manager who planned and executed all events for General Motors. This helped me gain experience on the corporate level, and I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t until I was planning my own wedding that I got the idea to turn my passion into a business. That is when I started Alexa Kay Events.
We’d love to hear more about Alexa Kay Events. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Alexa Kay Events is a full-service wedding planning and design company. As a wedding planner, my goal is to create joy and cultivate love in all aspects of life and most importantly in my client’s lives. I understand how overwhelming the planning process can be, but I am here to bring peace of mind. I offer three packages, full planning, partial planning and month of coordination. With this being said I am walking alongside my couples every (or almost every) step of the way. I love to take a couples love story and bring it to life throughout their big day. This lets their guests get to know them as a couple and adds little touches they will remember forever. Whether this is through establishing color combinations, a place card wall, dessert table or centerpieces, I love to tie all things back to the couple and how they got to this day.
My goal in every wedding is for the couple to enjoy their engagement and wedding day. I want them to look back and remember all the happy moments together with their family, friends and each other and not how they worried about how everything was going to get done in time and run smoothly. So I would have to say, my goal is to make a couples dream wedding appear, and all of their stress disappear.
Can you walk us through some of the problems or struggles your face?
As a wedding planner, I know it can be difficult in a variety of ways. We have to be there for whatever the bride a groom want throughout the year or so engagement, we have the be the strong and occasionally stern voice on wedding day, and we need to be able to fix any problem that is thrown our way without hesitation.
The realization that there is no “perfect checklist bride” and that every bride is unique and has their own vision and preferences throws many challenges into the mix as well. My take on every bride is how I can serve them best. Nobody is the same, and that is why I do not treat every client the same. Yes, they will get the same top-tier service no matter who they are, but depending on their differing needs, preferences, and desires, I tailor make a planning process to fit them perfectly.
Throughout the wedding, process problems will arise, and I step in and become “the bad guy”. This can be seen by me sternly telling the drunk groomsman to get in line and behave, making the catering team take the food back and recook it, or even working with vendors to make last-second changes possible.
Problems will arise in every planning process, and I will be there to resolve them. One of the things I pride myself on is being resourceful. I like to look at any situation from many perspectives in order to come at it from the angle that seems best. In saying this, I always bring back up supplies to avoid crisis situations altogether. I make sure to have an emergency kit full of hairspray, bobby pins, stain remover, mints, wipes, dress tape, candle backups, floral wire, scissors…if the bride needs it… I have it because you never know what will be needed on your big day, but I always take a good amount of time to carefully plan backups that could save major aspects of my weddings.
Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people connect with you?
My work is displayed on my website and my social media pages. This is the best representation of what I have done. I am creative and resourceful and love to try new things and bring ideas to life. On a wedding day, I have worked with a couple to plan the best day they could hope for. In the end, it is their day, and it was an adventure getting there. I love seeing the reactions from them as well as their friends and family when they see everything come together.
Clients, friends, vendors and fellow planners can support each other and myself in a variety of ways. Supporting someone’s work in this industry is a very social event! Whether it’s by recommending myself or another individual who does great work to a searching client, leaving reviews and feedback on social media, or simply speaking to their experience with myself by word of mouth are all great ways I have been positively supported.
