Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittni Williamson.
Brittni, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started working at a flower shop when I was 17 years old in my hometown in Iowa. I was hired to help do “Cinderella work” as some might say, processing flowers and cleaning buckets mostly. I was very close to the owner and she quickly took me under her wing and offered to teach me how to design. It was an instant love affair that’s only intensified as the years have passed. Before starting college, I knew I wanted to own a shop of my own, so I chose to study business and continued working as a floral designer outside of school and afterwards in Oklahoma and Texas. Fast forward to the fall of 2017, when I was finally able to realize my dream and open B. Marie’s Flowers!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am blessed with the opportunity to make the special occasions in a person’s life beautiful through flowers. I take inspiration from lots of sources – other designers, magazines, nature – but primarily, I want to make each floral gift personal to the sender and recipient. I hope that people can see the thought and love that I put into each bouquet that’s unique to them. No two flowers are alike and I believe the same should be true about flower arrangements. I start with a one-of-a-kind vase and add a variety of flowers, some that you’ve seen before and probably a couple you haven’t. Each bloom is hand selected from a top-quality supplier (oftentimes the same day) so you always get the best of what’s available.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think one of the biggest challenges florists face is the customer’s expected value. There are so many online companies and grocery stores that can mass produce bouquets for much less than a traditional florist can. So when a person goes to support that local shop (which is wonderful!), they don’t understand the difference in price, quality, and design. A local florist can’t purchase in the large quantities a grocery store does and so don’t have the same discounted prices, they hire and train professional designers and delivery drivers who know how to properly handle the flowers. There’s so many other factors contributing to the overall value of a bouquet from these local florists like my own that sometimes it’s hard to see that all roses really aren’t equal.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The best way to see my work is to place an order with me! There’s not a single occasion where flowers aren’t appropriate and, in my experience, flowers just to say “I’m thinking of you” are appreciated more than any other. Social media is another great way to see many of the different bouquets and weddings I’ve worked on in the past, unfortunately, they haven’t figured out how to infuse the photos with the scent of the flowers so you’ll miss that part of the experience. 🙂 I’ve also started to get involved in bridal shows in the area so you can stop by my booth there to see some samples.
