Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Craig.
Casey, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I moved around a lot as a child, living in Louisiana, California, South Carolina, Florida and then finally to Texas. I got my BFA from the University of Texas, and after graduating started working as a graphic designer and freelance illustrator. As an illustrator, I did work for various clients like the ASPCA, the Discovery Channel, and several national magazines and children’s publishers. This gave me great experience in establishing good work habits, communicating well with others, and improving my skills.
In 1993, my husband and I moved to Wimberley where our two sons were born and raised, and the artist/mom and work/life juggling act kept me busy and very content. I gradually transitioned from illustration over to mixed media paintings that have a strong sense of design and simplicity that evolved from my graphic art background. Currently, I am fortunate to have my work represented in many local, regional and national art galleries and by a fine art publisher that reproduces and distributes some of my images. I enjoy working in my home studio, and that allows for frequent interaction and often amusing commentary from my family. My studio looks out into our backyard where I can often see roadrunners, deer, foxes and other local wildlife that then find their way into my paintings.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Living in the Texas hill country there is no shortage of inspiration for me. It is a beautiful area, and many of the animals that I paint are all around. I love being able to observe them in their natural setting and then recreate them in a more stylized and simplified way with an emphasis on pattern and texture. My work is predominantly done with acrylics because it is such a versatile medium, and then many found, decorative and fibrous papers are often included. I mostly paint animals and will never tire of this subject. It is very rewarding for me when someone says that my work made them smile or laugh. Painting is a joyful process for me, and I want to share that joy with the viewer.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I think it is very important not to let anyone else define your success, as it is different for everyone. For me, it is doing the very best art that I can and enjoying the process that gets me to the final painting.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My website www.caseycraig.com is the best place to see my work. Information about available paintings, shows, galleries, prints, cards and an option to sign up for my e-newsletter is all available there.
