Check out Melanie Farris’ Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Farris.

Melanie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in rural east Texas, near the Tyler area. I enjoyed many creative activities while growing up such as art, theater and poetry. Going into my teenage years, I left many of my creative outlets behind because I was more focused on my social life. In 2012, while living in California, a dear friend introduced me to sacred geometry. At that moment, it felt like a light switch flipped on and I began to teach myself how to draw geometric art with a compass and ruler. From doodling to painting with acrylics, a meditative hobby blossomed into a thriving passion.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I begin my geometric paintings by using a compass and a ruler to sketch the desired design onto the canvas. This is a very mathematical process. I then tap into my intuition to paint the background with acrylics. Most of my backgrounds are bright, colorful rainbows that pop underneath the geometric patterns. I prefer to use bright colors because I believe they give positive energy to the viewer and myself. Who doesn’t love a good rainbow?! My goal in each painting is to use symmetry and flow at the same time. My favorite paintings can be hung in any direction, giving a slightly different view of the piece. Most of the geometric designs I use are found throughout nature, the cosmos, and ancient cultures. My purpose is to guide the viewer to the realization that we are all connected. We are all connected to each other, the planet, the solar system, and our entire universe.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I believe that many factors in our current culture can leave people feeling divisive and disconnected. Art brings us together in these difficult and confusing times. Art helps us reflect on ourselves and the world around us. Current events give me motivation to spread love and positivity through my art, making the world a better place.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Two large pieces are a part of the summer exhibit at Art for The People gallery in Austin, TX. I regularly show work at Gallery Lucid, Art.Work & Tabwork in Austin as well. I will have several pieces from my rainbow series in the gallery at Art Outside Festival in late October, located in Rockdale, TX. I sell most of my artwork through Instagram or Facebook.
