Check out Nubia Garcia’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nubia Garcia.

Nubia, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Ever since I can remember I’ve loved anything that has to do with being creative. I always had something to create, draw, or craft. While in college, I decided to study a design-based field which led me to environmental design (architecture). This then led me to take it a step further and get my Master’s degree in Interior Design at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA. After graduating and working on the field for a few years, I realized it didn’t quite fulfill me creatively as much as I thought it would.

Parallel to being in college, I discovered the art of polymer clay for the first time, thus Colorful Blossom was born. On a tiny desk covered with polymer clay and sculpting tools, I began experimenting with the art of sculpting and mixed media as a hobby/stress reliever and immediately fell in love. I started out making tiny dessert jewelry and it slowly evolved to different styles such as steampunk, vintage, and eventually tiny blossoms.

In 2014 I got married and moved to North Texas with my husband from Miami, FL. Since moving here, I have been so grateful to meet and be inspired by the wonderful community of artists that this area has to offer and the support system it creates for each other. Thanks to this, my art has evolved exponentially and my creativity has grown.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I always had an affinity towards flowers. Perhaps it is due to my lack of gardening skills, but I’ve always admired anyone who can grow beautiful flowers and, most importantly, keep them alive. You see, I’m one of those people who cannot even keep a cactus alive so I decided to sculpt, hand paint, and wear the blossoms instead – no water or sun needed.

My art mainly consists on hand-sculpting miniature flowers and succulents out of polymer clay. I then hand-paint the tips of the petals to give it a more realistic feel and sometimes, when I’m making miniature gardens, I like to add tiny crystals to give it a more whimsical feel. To be honest, I just love anything that sparkles. So why not add a bit of joy to each piece?

With little time and a lot of patience, my flower experiments started “blooming” and slowly evolved into a brand of unique, wearable pieces with great attention to detail, color, and design.

Both my cultural and professional background have helped me develop a colorful, unique brand of jewelry catered to all who want to express their individuality by wearing one of a kind, handmade pieces.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
This is an ongoing challenge for me as well but I’m working on it. Advice welcome!

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
