Check Out Abigail Powell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Powell.

Hi Abigail, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Dr. Abigail Powell is a licensed psychologist, prenatal and postpartum expert, and Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Clinical Specialist. A lifelong Texan and mother of three, Dr. Powell brings both professional expertise and personal experience to her integrative work with women and families.
After earning her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate in clinical psychology, Dr. Powell began her career supporting mothers through the emotional transitions of pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting. Her passion for maternal mental health grew out of her own experience as the first in her friend group to become a mom while living far from family. That season of loneliness showed her just how essential community, informed care, and self-compassion are for mothers.
As the spouse of a former active-duty Navy SEAL, Dr. Powell has lived the realities of resilience and transition firsthand. She’s deeply passionate about informed consent in birth and medical settings and about integrating holistic, nutritional, and lifestyle approaches into mental health care.
Today, she combines her specialized training in perinatal and postpartum mental health with a functional, whole-person lens, helping moms feel confident, supported, and empowered to trust themselves again, because motherhood should feel meaningful, not overwhelming.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Dr. Powell’s journey into what she is doing now has been anything but smooth. After beginning her doctorate with the hopes of becoming a psychologist at a children’s hospital specializing in oncology, she met her husband who had finished his training to become a Navy SEAL. Their lives were uprooted to Virginia, where they had spent five years. Shortly after arriving in Virginia, they unexpectedly learned about the pending arrival of their first-born. Nonetheless, Dr. Powell’s husband insisted that she continue to pursue her degree. She earned her Master’s shortly after giving birth to their first child. Two years later, they welcomed their second child. Dr. Powell often attended conferences with her children in tow, while her husband was away on his training trips. Dr. Powell had pursued her degree while being primary parent to her two boys while here husband was often gone three quarters of the year. Their family pushed through two deployments with children while Dr. Powell was completing her internship. Dr. Powell’s husband had decided shortly after their first was born that the military life was not a career he intended to have in the long run. He began pursuing his new career in aviation. Shortly after deciding to get out of the military, Dr. Powell’s husband sustained a medical injury that impacted their family and her husband’s medical career. Dr. Powell began researching how to support her husband’s condition and improve his quality of life while simultaneously finishing her doctorate. Shortly after moving to Texas to be closer to family and while she was finishing the final part of her degree, Dr. Powell learned that they would be welcoming their third child later that year. She successfully defended her dissertation while pregnant, passed her licensing exams in her third trimester, and start her own private practice assisting moms in the toughest seasons of motherhood.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While on maternity leave, Dr. Powell persisted in receiving advanced perinatal mental health training as well as learning to include functional medicine and nutrition into her scope of practice. That is when Dr. Powell spent her time postpartum completing a certificate to became a Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Clinical Specialist. Dr. Powell is unique because she understands that food and lifestyle can be a powerful tool in our mental wellbeing. She sees the mother as the base of the family, teaching her clients that if a mother is crumbling, so is the family. Dr. Powell is no stranger to functional and holistic medicine, partaking in it herself with her weekly chiropractor appointments and lengthy referral network of family friendly providers in multiple areas of expertise.
In addition to her integrative technique, Dr. Powell offers a program bridging the gap between pregnancy mental health and postpartum. She assists expecting mothers with creating a birth plan, providing education on each intervention and giving mothers the opportunity to choose what is best for their birth and babies. The program begins with a consult call where Dr. Powell learns about mom’s desired birth and goals for postpartum. Then, an intake is scheduled where Dr. Powell presents a handcrafted personalized resource for the expecting mother, educating her on the proper nutrition for postpartum healing, tools for birth goals, and resources for both mom and her birth partner. This program ensures that mom is being seen by a mental health professional prior to giving birth as a preventative measure. Therefore, if the new mom is experiencing any postpartum struggles, she does not require a new intake or a lengthy process in getting acquainted with a mental health provider. Instead, Dr. Powell, a perinatal specialist and Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Clinical Specialist is there for support in sometimes under 24 hours.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Dr. Powell loves the DFW area because of the different communities she has come across. She has found that despite DFW being a large metroplex, there is always a friendly face. Dr. Powell wishes that she did not have to drive 30+ minutes to get to her nearest HEB, but knows that those tortillas are 100% worth it!
