Check Out Alejandra Gamez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Gamez.

Hi Alejandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Living in Dallas makes it challenging to stand out as a local artist since the city is filled with creative talent. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted a career where I could create art. Growing up here, I took every opportunity to join local art shows and showcase my paintings, determined to get my name out there.

But reality hit when adulthood came around bills, responsibilities, and a full time job that left me no time to draw or paint. I started to lose hope that my dream of becoming a full-time artist would never happen.

That changed when my friend offered me an apprenticeship in tattooing. It was a huge risk to quit my job and dive into something new, but I decided to trust the process. After countless hours of drawing and practicing on fake skin, I finally began tattooing real clients.

Now, I get to create art every day while building a career I love. I’m beyond grateful for how far I’ve come and excited for what’s ahead.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Although I’m successful now, the journey hasn’t been easy. Not everyone believed in my decision to become a tattoo artist, and some people chose to distance themselves from me. During my apprenticeship it was challenging. After quitting my job, I had no income for months, which made budgeting extremely difficult. However, those struggles taught me resilience and made my success even more meaningful.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a tattoo artist working out of a private studio, where I have the freedom to create on my own schedule. I specialize in linework and soft black and grey tattoos, with a soft shading style. I’m especially drawn to tattooing animals, it’s what I love most.

I take pride in how quickly I’ve grown as an artist and the precision I bring to every piece. What sets me apart is the experience I give my clients, each session feels relaxed, personal, and I always focus on every detail.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Always do your research before choosing a mentor. People aren’t always what they seem on the outside. My advice is to build genuine connections with others in your industry; you never know how those relationships might help you later on. Most of the time, you don’t necessarily need a single mentor. Surrounding yourself with people who are open to sharing tips and experiences can teach you just as much. That’s how I improved my shading, by asking my coworkers for feedback and learning from their techniques.
