Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Elkin.
Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We started in the planning side of the event and wedding industry. We worked with brides and clients to execute all logistics and details that are necessary for a smooth event. However, I found myself tired and needing to be inspired after a few years of only being in logistics. I need a creative side to the business. That is when I decided to open the floral side of my company. I did florals before the official launch, but only for friends and family. Once I opened up this side of the company, it finally felt like I found what I was supposed to do. I still work in logistics/planning – getting florals to events is all about the details and planning so I still find use in my original trade. However, florals have given me a way to create beautiful spaces for people to enjoy some of the most monumental moments life has to offer. People are why we do this; to come alongside individuals as they celebrate some of the most beautiful moments in life is why we name our company The House of Honor. We hope that beyond the beautiful florals and the seamless experience, that our clients feel honored and celebrated throughout the entire experience.
We recently opened up our daily blooms experience, which allows us to be a part of all the moments in a daily way. We deliver florals all over the DFW area no matter the sentiment or celebration. We hope to serve our city with new look and experience when it comes to sending flowers!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think any business owner can vouch that the road is not paved with gold, there are a lot of aspects that people don’t get to seen when it comes to owning and operating a business, especially in the floral world. There is so much labor that goes into the prep, design, and delivery of flowers, no matter what the scale, but we have had an incredible team come alongside us that has been so essential. I wouldn’t trade this for anything; though it has its difficulties, it has so many rewards. The people we have gotten to work with and for have been some of the greatest opportunities I’ve ever had!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a florist, but my take on floral design is heavily influenced by art. I use structure, texture, and dimension to bring a new look to the floral industry. I love playing with the natural elements and placing them in a way never imagined before. Though our work does wither quickly, there is something so beautiful about starting again the next day – creating a completely new work. I am most proud of our work with other creatives/businesses in the DFW area. We have gotten to collaborate with other businesses on set design and installations, which has currently been my favorite side of floral design.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I read a lot of self-help books in order to help me build healthy habits and routines in order to be effective at my work. But a practice that has best helped me is listening. Listening to others in my community, people who are steps ahead of me in business, creatives who are making beautiful art, and so on. I think there is so much that comes from stopping and listening without thought of what you will say next or need to speak at all. I think sometimes we are too quick to contribute that we don’t even hear the conversation in the first place.
