Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Jimenez.
Hi Alexa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started back in 2014 when I decided to go to beauty school. I didn’t have much planned out but I knew I liked it. I liked the idea of being able to create something and also build a connection with people. I worked at a salon for 3 years before deciding that it was time to branch out and do something for myself. I left and maybe took about 5 clients; it was very scary.
Jumping in without not knowing much of how to run your own business definitely was frightening but you grow, adapt, and learn. I am going on 2 years now, being an independent stylist at JNS salon. I’m most definitely not where I want to be I’m still very small. My next step in this career is to have my own studio, to then having my own salon working with like-minded people. I’m so excited, and I cannot wait.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the biggest struggles that I had were financial and emotional. Going from a steady paycheck to being self-employed was something that was very hard on me and my business. There was a lot of times where I wanted to quit and or, just go back to a commission salon. I think that’s something most people don’t tell you about being an independent stylist is that, some days/weeks will be great, you’ll be fully booked and some weeks you may have one client or you may have none and I feel like that’s the hardest part in overcoming your small business, especially when you are barely starting, it takes time to grow, you have to have a lot of patience and believe in yourself and in your craft.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist/colorist. My work ranges anywhere from cuts to color, to keratin treatments as well. I don’t have a specialty right now, I guess you could say I’m a Jack of all trades, I like a challenge! I do get a lot of brunettes and redheads, and those have become my favorite, I would love to specialize in those two.
What were you like growing up?
Definitely a drama queen (at times lol). As a child I was very goofy, I remember making my parents laugh all the time, with random things, there was definitely never a dull moment. Although in school I was very shy, it was hard for me to be myself. My interests changed a lot throughout the years. I was very much into the bratz, I loved going into Claire’s and getting jewelry and nail polishes, all the girly girl things, but at the same time, I had an older brother, and I would find interest in what he would be playing, like yu-gi-oh, dragon ball z, and Pokémon. I loved being outside too. I had a bike, skateboard, scooter, etc. It could have been 100 degrees outside, somehow, I still wanted to be out there riding my bike.
