Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Harrison.
Hi Alexis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My love for fashion started at 8 years old. My mom used to host fashion shows at the church we went to and also at event venues. She would choose the models (I was one of them of course lol), the clothes, and she even choreographed the model walk routines. That’s when I developed a passion for runway modeling.
I went to high school at Town view Magnet Center where I continued learning more about the fashion industry and also modeled in an organization called Future Fashion Leaders of America (FFLA). Once I got to college, I began exploring other avenues of fashion and decided that I wanted to be more behind the scenes. I graduated with a bachelor’s from Stephen F. Austin State University where I majored in Fashion Merchandising and minored in Hospitality Administration.
School was honestly a struggle because I was trying to figure out my creative identity and where I “fit in”, while also being told what I’m “supposed” to do. But it wasn’t until after I finished that I began to really search for my purpose in life. I remember reading this book called “Millionaire Success Habits” by Dean Graziosi during the lockdown from COVID and it was so inspiring and authentic! He basically described simple tools to help those who have a desire to find their purpose to be successful, but not sure exactly where to start or how to get there. He talks about knowing your “why”, which is where your true purpose comes from. This book got me through A LOT of difficult days and nights during my journey. I still use these tools to keep me focused and driven.
In August 2020, I created a fashion styling service, Camille’s Inspo-Closet. I created this service to help others find their individual style purpose. After about a year, I realized that although styling is something I’m good at, I didn’t feel passionate enough about it to make it a career.
Since then, I have been working on revamping and recreating. I am now building a brand called Camille’s Kloset Studio, which will consist of a limitless variety of clothing items for men and women. “Camille” is my middle name if you’re wondering where it comes from. It’s like my alter ego.
In February 2021, I created my Unisex clothing brand, Undivided Society. It represents a strong and unapologetic mindset for unity, equality, and freedom of expression in today’s society. We live in a world where our beliefs and differences often divide us, but the truth is that there can be unity in diversity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. There’s been many tears, frustration, and self-doubt. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve questioned myself about if I was even supposed to be pursuing this. Anxiety has also played a part in it. Struggling with anxiety while also trying to build a business feels like having to push yourself 10 times harder when stepping out of your comfort zone. It sucks! But I’m constantly working through it and quieting those voices in the back of my head through my creativity.
In all honesty, this interview came right around a time where I was in the middle of changing things up a bit and figuring out what truly makes me happy.
At first, I thought that it was bad timing for the interview to happen because I didn’t want to act as if I have it all together business-wise. But once I read the mission statement for Voyage, I realized that this was perfect timing; God’s timing.
I’m still on my journey and figuring things out through trial and error, but seeing my growth and knowing that I can make an impact in this world makes it so worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Undivided Society is a safe zone for people of different races, religions, sexual orientations, and backgrounds to express themselves and wear what makes them feel good without judgment.
This collection will be a part of my inventory in Camille’s Kloset Studio.
I’m most proud of my patience and perseverance. Having a demanding 9-5 job along with working to become a full-time entrepreneur has not been the easiest thing to do. But developing more patience and trusting God’s process has definitely helped me persevere through the difficult parts.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that everyone isn’t going to understand my vision. So, it’s important that I stay focused on my purpose and not let other people’s opinions/insecurities deter me from what is meant for me.
