Check Out Angela Harris’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Harris.

Hi Angela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been a therapist for seven years and started my work in substance use residential treatment. While I loved this population and the complexity of the work, I always had an interest in treating eating disorders and started working with eating disorders as soon as I could. I also became EMDR trained around the same time and so began my journey of intertwining EMDR therapy within my clinical work and treatment of eating disorders. Over the years, I have worked at multiple levels of care and treated adolescents and adults focused on concerns such as eating disorders, anxiety, depression, complex PTSD, and dissociative disorders. I am now in private practice treating clients in both Texas and Oklahoma through Angela Harris Counseling. I’ve recently added CEDS Consultation, EMDR Consultation, and Continuing Education to my services available for my fellow helping professionals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most clinicians find burnout to be one of the most challenging pieces of this job and this has been a struggle for me as well. My journey in developing a self care routine has been crucial to staying in the field and staying passionate about the work. Over the years, I have adapted and shifted my self care strategies from my practice of yoga to how many sessions I do in a week. It is an ever-evolving process and I’ve learned to keep an open mind about how I practice self care and how it may need to change over time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in treating eating disorders, PTSD, and dissociative disorders including Dissociative Identity Disorder. I’m also an EMDR Consultant in Training and love to incorporate EMDR throughout my practice. I use EMDR to not only treat PTSD but eating disorders and dissociative disorders as well. I also offer continuing education and trainings to fellow helping professionals focused on EMDR, eating disorders, and dissociative disorders. I love to support my fellow helping professionals in deepening their clinical skills with these complex and misunderstood populations.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I enjoy the variety Dallas provides including restaurants, activities, ways to connect with others, and even providers such as therapists or doctors. I’m grateful we have so many resources! I do wish we had more nature and greenery though. However, I do enjoy a walk on a nice day at White Rock Lake or Arbor Hills.
