Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Barnhill.
Hi Anthony, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started hair school in 2006 while figuring out what I really wanted to do—it was supposed to be something “easy” while I found my path. By 2007, I began my first salon job, assisting for two years before venturing out on my own in 2013. In 2016, I discovered a passion for education, doing my first trade show in Houston, and continued teaching with a brand called Malibu C, which became a favorite for clients in North Dallas.
Through the education circuit, I met the owner of the salon where I currently work. After a stint in Indianapolis working corporate for Malibu C, I realized how much I missed being behind the chair and moved back to Texas to focus on what I love most—creating hair, not spreadsheets.
Since 2019, I’ve concentrated on building my business in DFW as a blonding and hair color specialist, growing an amazing clientele, and returning to education with a brand called Danger Jones—all while developing my own brand in my salon suite at Abstrakt Studio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Moving to a new city and state was definitely exciting. I had already made a big move from Oklahoma City to Indianapolis, so this transition felt a bit easier in comparison. Beyond getting to know a new city, working in the salon felt like riding a bike.
I’d say my biggest challenge so far has been balancing social media with my work-life balance. I’d love to post more, or even create funny videos, but I see my Instagram primarily as a portfolio—meant to showcase my work and give potential clients a glimpse of who I am. Finding ways to highlight my personality while staying true to that vision is something I continue to work on.
Continuing to grow, build my brand, and attract new clients is an ongoing challenge, but it’s one I genuinely enjoy. I love what I do, and I’m always ready for a good challenge.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always loved color, but it wasn’t until I started diving into the chemistry behind it that I truly fell in love with coloring and blonding. I’ve also taught technique classes focused on blonding, so when I moved to DFW, it felt natural to develop a clientele that really values those services.
What sets me apart is my commitment to constant growth—not just for myself, but for others, too. There are so many talented stylists and salons here; I’d rather lift others up than compete.
I’m most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone—attending events, connecting with other stylists, and pushing past the self-doubt that can hold you back. I’m also proud of the dedication I’ve put into growing my business. Every day is a learning process, but I believe that nothing changes if nothing changes. Perfection doesn’t exist, but growth is always achievable, and keeping that mindset close has been key for me.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’ve often thought about offering a shadowing program for hairstylists who want to learn techniques and formulations. Beyond that, I’m happy to share what I’ve learned about running a business, including resources I still use today. Support from clients is always appreciated, whether it’s through positive feedback or Google reviews. I’m also open to collaborating with other creatives—makeup artists, photographers, fellow stylists, and more. A quick DM, email, or phone call is all it takes to start brainstorming ideas and exploring creative projects together.
