Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Cushman.
Hi Barbara, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi! I am Barbara, a cosmetic injector. I have always had a passion for helping others. This is exactly why I got into nursing in 2002. I worked with an amazing doctor that introduced me to the wonderful world of aesthetics. Once I was educated on injectables and injected my first patient -I knew my heart was where it belonged! I found every aspect of aesthetics fascinating! Seeing the smiles and confidence radiating from my patients is indescribable. After working in large practices, I quickly realized I wanted to open my own place someday. I wanted to be able to offer my patients products and procedures that I wholeheartedly believe in and actually do myself. I wanted to build long-lasting relationships with everyone I had the pleasure of meeting in my chair. It is highly important to me for my patients to know they are a person with feelings, not dollar signs. This was something I would dream of daily! After many, many years of determination, blood, sweat, and tears, a lot of tears- I finally accomplished my dream in 2021 when I opened Bliss Beauty Bar Aesthetics!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely encountered struggles along the way! I had my oldest daughter as a teenager and was basically told my life was over. I was told by numerous people that I could give up on my dreams of wanting to be a nurse. The more I heard people tell me I couldn’t do it- the more determined I became for myself and my daughter. I was only able to inject Wednesday evenings and Sundays while working a full-time job, going to school, and being a mom, for many years. At this time, injecting full-time seemed so far out of reach. Opening my own business was terrifying. When I turned 40, something “clicked,” and I knew I had to follow my dreams or I would get carried away giving my all, working full time for someone else while not being present for my husband, daughters, and grandkids. It was basically now or never in my mind. My goal was to continue doing what I loved while creating a balance to be present for my family (thank goodness for my amazing husband for always picking up my slack!). I wanted to create a family/women-owned business where my daughters could see that no matter what happens in their life or what adversity they face, they can do anything they put their minds to. I want to share the joy of helping others regain their self-confidence back while empowering other women during the process. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that I can’t please everyone. A little over a year later, … We can finally sit back and say, “We did it!!” and every single struggle along the way was worth it. I am now able to do what I love daily while being present for my family!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I offer all injectables, micro-needling, PRP (hair, injectable, sexual health), and micro-needling. I truly believe we all deserve to look and feel our best! When we look in the mirror and feel beautiful, we naturally radiate that positivity in our daily lives. I am a firm believer in making self-care and mental health a priority in our lives. Wanting to age gracefully / look more rested isn’t about being vain, it’s about bringing that confidence back that you deserve. I am truly honored and humbled by every single appointment made. I am very open and transparent with my patients; I treat every single patient as I would want to be treated. I listen to their aesthetic concerns and goals while setting them up with realistic expectations. I take great pride in putting my patient’s well-being first and building lasting relationships with them. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their trust and loyalty, and I will be forever grateful for each and every person that has trusted me as their injector over the years.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is knowing at the end of every day that I treated each patient with dignity and respect. Knowing that I treated them with the appropriate product/treatment while providing them with all the proper education/options so we could make an educated decision together. When a patient leaves happy- that’s success in my book! Success to me is going home after an amazing day of injecting beautiful souls to spend time with my wonderful family. Success is me being able to enjoy the best of both worlds!
