Check Out Ben Scheck’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Scheck.

Hi Ben, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I never set out thinking I’d be a church planter. From teacher to youth director to pastor, God has always been forming me. My calling has always been to serve people, walk with them in their faith, and point them to God’s grace. In January 2021, I was given the opportunity to do that in a new way when I was passed the torch of leadership at The Grove Church.

The Grove’s journey is anything but traditional. We began in homes, moved into the lobby of an RV park, and then found a surprising home in Marty B’s restaurant in Bartonville. Worshiping in a bar and barbecue restaurant shaped us more than we realized—it gave us a unique, casual, table-centered style that brought people closer together. What could have been a stopgap became the DNA of our church family.

I’ve learned along the way that church planting is never done alone. Partnerships with a local restauranteur and businessman, a real estate agent I met through Rotary, and a local church builder helped us grow, thrive, and eventually break ground on our own space in Argyle. This fall, we’ll move into that building—but we’ll keep worshiping at tables, because connection is at the heart of who we are.

For me, serving as pastor of The Grove isn’t about building an institution. It’s about creating a place where people feel welcomed, seen, and loved, and where together we can encounter God in ways that change our lives. From homes to restaurants to a brand-new building, one thing has stayed the same: God is faithful, and people matter.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Church planting has not come without its challenges. For over four years, we searched for land on which to build, all while shouldering the constant rigors of setting up and tearing down each week as we gathered for worship in a restaurant. Being part of a new church means there is a lot of sweat equity required from everyone—it is not for the faint of heart. Yet in the midst of the hard work, God has provided exactly what we’ve needed: faithful leaders to guide, talented musicians to lead in praise, tech-savvy youth to serve with energy, and joyful children who remind us why the effort is worth it. Every challenge has been met with God’s provision, and every step forward is a testimony to His faithfulness.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a pastor, nothing excites me more than sharing the good news of the gospel to every generation. I’m known for using creativity to make God’s Word come alive—whether through engaging teaching or even illusions, since I’m also a hobbyist magician. Those visual moments grab attention and open the door to deeper conversations about faith.

What I’m most proud of is seeing lives changed as people discover hope and purpose in Christ. What sets me apart is blending solid biblical teaching with creative methods that help people not just hear the gospel, but experience it in a way they’ll never forget.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The key to my work as a pastor is humility. My job isn’t to be the center of attention—it’s to glorify God, equip others, and share the good news of Jesus. Humility, whether chosen or learned the hard way, keeps me grounded and reminds me: I’m here to serve. And it’s in serving others that I see God’s power show up most clearly.
