Check Out Blake Sexton’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Sexton.

Blake Sexton

Hi Blake, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I am a local barback with hopes of making photography my career. I started out shooting film and graduated to digital when I purchased my first DSLR in 2017.

I work at Lava Cantina in the colony as a barback, and when I have downtime at work. I photograph the bands (mostly local tributes) on the Lava Cantina stage. This has led to a few paid gigs outside of work and even a few paid shoots for work. The vast majority of photos I take are for pleasure, practice, and exposure. My main photographic interests lie in portraits, live music, and automotive.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not. It’s been difficult to gain clients. With a service industry job, I find it difficult to find time to practice or promote myself. I don’t make enough money to update my gear. All of my cameras and lenses are over 10 years old, and I edit on an 8-year-old laptop. I use the cheapest Amazon wireless flashes and stands I can find. I have no studio space. I still refuse to give up on my passion despite the challenges.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Photography is my life’s passion. I mainly shoot live music due to my constant exposure to it at work. My main interest is portraiture, so I’m always stoked when a band hits me up for promo pics! I have a dark, gritty, and moody style and love to shoot with off-camera flash.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I don’t have a website yet, so hit me up on Instagram! (Though I don’t post nearly as often as I should!) @blakesextonphoto
