Check Out Brittani Binns’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittani Binns.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Brittani Mercedez and I was born and raised out of Detroit, MI, but recently relocated to North Dallas about 2 years ago. I am a proud alum of the University of Detroit Mercy graduating with a BA in Science and Biology. From elementary to college, I just knew I would go the traditional route and become some kind of medical professional. I had it all mapped out however, God had different plans. I had always had the entrepreneur “itch” but never knew to what capacity. Growing up in southwest Detroit, I watched my mother run a beauty shop as a licensed cosmetologist and be her own boss! Being around hair all my life, I naturally picked up on skills to do hair, but being a full-time beautician was never in my plans. One day I was asked to start someone’s locs. I had never done locs before but I didn’t let that stop me. I went right to YouTube and did some research and it was history after that! I fell in love with them and once I moved to Dallas, I finally figured out what to do to satisfy that entrepreneur “itch” and finally leave the 9 to 5 corporate world to be my own boss, just as I had seen my mother do for so many years! And Knot My Locs was born!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say it’s been a smooth, straight road, but it’s been a rewarding journey! Through every turn in my journey from wanting to be a doctor, to a pharmacist, to being a medical assistant and pharmacy technician, to now being a full-time loctician with my own business, I was able to learn and pull something from every opportunity. My experiences have truly set me up for the road I’m currently traveling. There were times I wanted to give up but I persevered and I will continue to persevere!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a natural Loctician and owner of Knot My Locs LLC., and I specialize in natural locs, loc extensions, retwists, loc styles, etc.! I am proud of myself for stepping out on faith, quitting my 9-5 pm corporate job, going full-time into locs, and opening my very own salon suite. But I am most proud of being a professional Black female business owner. My passion sets me apart from others. My passion for giving excellent customer service to make the journey for each client that much more rewarding!

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
Risks can be dangerous with exposure to any kind of loss, however, when I learned about the risk-to-reward ratio, it changed my entire perspective on taking risks. Risks are necessary in my opinion, however, I always want to make sure that the risk in most cases don’t outweigh the reward. I took a major risk by quitting my secure paying job where I know I had a check every 2 weeks, shifting to being a full time entrepreneur and not knowing if my appointment book would fill up enough to still pay the bills. The reward, however, outweighed the risks because my success, in the long run, was worth more than just a few months of discipline and hard work! I am now able to create my own schedule, enjoy life more, create generational wealth for my family, and because I do what I have passion for, it never feels like work!
