Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittani Newman.
Hi Brittani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Savoy Beauty started as Savoy Cosmetics. I was freelancing for MAC Cosmetics back in 2012-2014. January 2014, I was told they would no longer be using my services and it was then that I realized that I could be doing makeup on my own. So, I started taking clients out of my mom’s kitchen in February 2014.
I realized, while taking clients that I was only making ends meet by performing services. I really needed to find a way to make extra income. I studied all types of cosmetic formulations and decided on eyeshadows and lipsticks. In 2015, I released my first eyeshadow palette and moved to the DFW as my hometown just did not see the vision at that time. Unfortunately, I was terrified to continue my endeavors and just stopped promoting myself completely. I went back into corporate for about 3 years.
In 2018, I realized corporate was not fulfilling my happiness and I truly missed my clients and performing the art of makeup and even hair. After telling my fiance’ my talents, he was set on me getting back out there. I started by connecting with photographers and landed my first paid role for 4 hours on set. It was the most exhilarating feeling and I realized I had really found the thing that makes me happy. I decided to start marketing myself online and everywhere I went. When asked what I do, I did not hesitate.
I then had the feeling of needing to be successful when not performing a service. I decided on bath and body products because I am allergic to everything! When I researched and realized I could make those products myself, I started to play around with formulating butter creams, body butters, bath salts, etc. and Savoy Cosmetics birthed Savoy Beauty so that all things could fit under one name. The products really took off at pop up shops. I met a lovely lady, Debbie Ferrell, at a pop up in 2019 and she asked me if I made soaps. I explained that I was interested in adding it to my line, however, I did not have the money to try formulating and it not being successful at the moment. Formulating is a lot of trial and error, throwing away ingredients, and many calculations. She told me her and her dad would teach me for free. I’d just have to travel to Waco to their farm. NO PROBLEM! My husband and I went to their farm and Mack and Debbie Ferrell taught us soap from beginning to end. That was the best thing that happened to my business because out of all my products, soaps are now the most popular. I owe so much to them and I don’t think I could ever show how much that meant to me. Mr. Mack is no longer here with us, but I made sure he knew how appreciative I am for his kind gesture. He is thought of with every batch and every class I teach.
I then decided to get my license so I could be more professional and learn more about hair as I wanted to also offer those services. In 2021, I went to Aveda Institute and was licensed by September of 2022. During that time, I was scouted by my cosmetology instructor, David Torrey, to do makeup on a movie set. Because of him, I now have six movies under my belt; two of them with me being the key makeup artist. More will be added to the list soon. I’ve also been contracted by Jolinda’s Glam Squad to perform services for fitness competitions, which is one of my favorite atmospheres to be in.
I am now currently pivoting into bridal services. After being booked for a few weddings, I have come to the conclusion that it is also a favorite atmosphere. I love to see brides all made up and ready for their big day; whether I’ve performed hair, makeup, or both. Courthouse brides have truly stolen my heart as the day includes only them and I know that feels so special. I am still getting my name out in the DFW area, but my plan is to be a well known name within the next 3 years.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth at all! The biggest challenge is that the industry is now so saturated with service providers. You must find a way to make yourself stand out. I’m still learning how to do that in a big city. I sometimes beat myself up because imagine what those 3 years in corporate did for me? I feel like they set me back some as I should have been promoting myself then. Not wait for the world to catch up to beauty.
Also, my makeup style is very natural. Finding people who want to look natural as also been a challenge as makeup as taken a turn into being very dramatic and full glam.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in natural makeup applications and natural hair. I perform updos, half up dos, and natural makeup for brides, birthdays, photoshoots, movies, etc. I am most proud of the movies I have been apart of. Being able to watch something and know your work is all over the screen is a different feeling.
What sets me apart from others in this industry is the fact that I am truly doing this because doing these services and seeing these faces light up makes me the happiest. I leave never feeling like work. It feels like I’m giving back in a way. I wish I could do this for free! LOL but unfortunately that is not the way America is set up.
How do you think about happiness?
Being able to make people feel good. No matter what or how I can. I’ve experienced not being picked. I’ve experienced having all the talent, and because you aren’t the most popular, not receiving the accolades. It does not feel good. I never want anyone to feel that way. I make sure to include everyone I can and I make sure they know they are needed and appreciated. There is no way I could be as successful as I’ve been without the help of good people that made me feel seen. I love to make people feel the same.
