Check Out DK’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to DK.

Hi DK, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is DK. I am the creative director for the brand have a hood day®. In 2013 I created a brand called the projects which I later rebranded in 2017 to have a hood day®. I started the brand to fill a gap that I saw in the streets of Dallas. I was in the Deep Ellum scene back when it was just creatives and outcasts that hung out there. From my perspective, there was a major gap in fashion. There were a few brands that were out, but I believed that I could do it better. I released the projects at a Raw Art Show in 2013 where I debuted a crew neck for $40. I dropped a hoodie and denim jacket a few weeks after which did really well and landed me in a Dallas Observer interview. I lost momentum soon after focusing on my logo and not being in love with the brand name “the projects.” It had too many negative connotations to it and wasn’t really sending the message that I was trying to put out. So, I ended up completely stopping and putting the brand on the back burner. 4 years later in 2017, I linked up with a few of my college friends and we revamped the brand in to have a hood day®.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road for me. I have struggled with the same thing every designer struggles with. Finding the right name, logo design, manufacturer is something I think everyone struggles with. I’ve learned it’s all trial and error; there is no right way to do it, there is only “the way you did it.”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a mechanical engineer by profession, artist, musician. I think I am mostly known for my paintings & artwork. In the creative field, I am mostly proud of my Dallas fashion designs that represent the city. I think my designs set me apart from the crowd. nobody’s thinking of the designs that I am thinking. My mechanical/OCD kicks in when it comes to creativity and no one can create a cleaner design that I can, respectfully.
