Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Monette
Hi Desmond, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started fashion design later in my teens after pursuing an athletic career early on. I’ve always been around fashion since a child. My mom always made sure me and my sibling were always properly dressed. This play a crucial part in personal style, especially being close to brands like Ralph Lauren since a very young age. Also, My Grandmother serves as my inspiration as she designed and sewed clothing way before I was born. Watching how she put smiles on faces, and brought joy to hearts of people made me realize how impactful fashion really is. Being a self taught to school graduate, to industry professional has been a challenging yet fulfilling process. Working now with athletes and celebrities is a shocking thing for myself. My teenage self could’ve never guessed this position in life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Fashion has its ups and downs likes any other creative field. My mom always told me, “Trying to be a fashion designer is like trying to to be a singer or painter.” Late nights finishing projects, unpredictable financial times, and failed projects are some struggles. But ever trial and tribulation is worth it. I wouldn’t trade this for anything else in the world
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a fashion designer. I specialize in pattern-making, sample garment making, final garment construction. I’ve also done some photography work with one of my good friends Venny Etienne, who’s the founder of Levenity, fashion brand also based here in Dallas. I have a lot of special moments from seeing professional singer wear clothes I’ve designed on stage to athletes walking down tunnels is things I’ve designed. The most proud moment is of recent where I’ve assisted Venny in his recent collection after 4 years of being silent. It was a special night. Something that sets me apart is my journey into fashion. It’s so unconventional when compared to those who’s been doing this since they were children. I wanted to play in the NFL. Fashion wasn’t even my plan b.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Mentors like Venny Etienne, and Melissa Taylor. All of my friends who saw something special in me even when it was hard for me to see. My mom and grandma for the personal touches to my fashion journey. My family for there continual support. Last but never least, God for providing me with this gift.
