Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Nicole
Hi Destiny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Midland, Texas, which is a very small country town in West Texas. I can say what really molded me to be consistent from a young age was I started playing softball & it allowed me to have a routine. That journey was 12 years long. The biggest push was, my parents divorced and long story short that was a huge transition. I got hired at MAC cosmetics on my 18th birthday and that’s what started my makeup journey. About 9 months in I enrolled myself in cosmetology school in Lubbock, Tx. I felt that I needed more credibility But that didn’t work out so I ended up going back to MAC and decided mentally I was going to move to Dallas & I was going to start my life there. After months of driving back-and-forth, I finally founded a transfer that was manageable for supporting myself. So I up and left all that I knew and packed my 2010 Mazda 3 and moved. I had experienced some challenges with bosses of mine & decided to quit with MAC & just become a freelancer with the company to gain more freedom. I ended up getting a gig at the strip club and did that for about six months up until COVID. I ended up going back home for six weeks due to the world being shut down and came back out of impulse because I felt that I was in a box and I just uprooted my whole life and that Covid wasn’t going to stop anything. Once I moved back the clients that I did have really supported me and from there, I just continued to grow and make the connections that I have now. When I tell you, I have done so much free work but it’s not bad. It is part of the game to get yourself out there and show people how capable you are and to build your credibility up and how you will make sacrifices for what you want. Now I have great connections working with the WNBA, NBA, sports agencies, traveling alongside a makeup artist who is huge in the body building world! It’s so crazy to see what consistency and persistence and GOD will do in your life!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, we faced COVID & with me not having any family out here it was definitely a challenge because real life situations would happen and I had to figure it out. As much as my family supports and loves me and would show up they are 5 hours away and can’t just come. it makes you stronger and depend on God and gives you that mental heads up to have / find a good community of friends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist who specializes in all glams but my favorite and most known is a bronze glam. I believe what sets me apart is my hunger for success and my desire and determination to show up as my best and greatest self when it comes to my business and my work! I cater to all women but especially women of color. I am so grateful that they have always supported me & felt comfortable with me because they deserve to feel comfortable & catered too.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love to listen to Jerry Flowers his therapy thursdays because they help mentally and spiritually.
