Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Johnny Chiles.
Hi DJ Johnny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As most DJ’s will tell you, music has always been a passion of mine. Growing up on artist such as Lauryn Hill, Usher, Alicia Keys always made me have an appreciation for not only music but many art forms. The transition into DJ’ing was very unexpected but at the same time wasn’t a surprise to those who know me. If there’s credit to give, I’d have to give it to my friends at Soundworks Academy. No matter how interested I was in the idea of DJ’ing, there was never really an avenue where I knew I would get the chance to learn. Soundworks presented that opportunity for me to get my feet into DJ’ing business and now it’s become my full-time passion. Since my time at Soundworks, I’ve done holiday parties, graduation parties, weddings, clubs, lounges, and even house parties. My next goal is to have my own event series that travels from city to city across the country!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d be surprised if anyone has had a smooth road into any type of business. There’s always obstacles or things that you’ll have to learn along the way. One of my biggest lessons was understanding that once this became full time for me, I was no longer just a “DJ”. I was a promoter, influencer, social media planner, sound engineer, MC, at time it even feels like I’m a talent agent. You end up wearing multiple hats and having to learn far more than just how to create a great vibe for your crowd. Wearing all those hats also cuts into your passion. I’ve spent some days strictly creating social media posts & marketing to where I don’t get to play at all. Those are the days where you might feel less proud of yourself but the day that someone reaches out to book you because of that post, then it becomes worth it again.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I feel like most DJ’s have a playing style that they’re known for. I enjoy playing many different genres from Hip Hop to Jersey Club. I have a strong passion for R&B music so my R&B nights are becoming popular! The sets I have the most fun with are the one’s where I get to combine as many genre’s as possible. Anytime I can play some Baile Funk, House, or Afro Beats, I have the time of my life. I really just enjoy seeing people sing, dance and connect with others because of their love for a certain song.
I’d say the thing I’m most proud of is how I’ve been able to open doors and how I’ve been able to use resources and people around me. Having other DJ friends has been a huge help along with networking as a whole. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy in any field so having resources of people who have been in your shoes can take you further faster than you expected.
One thing I think sets me apart from other DJ’s is the type of energy I’m able to bring. I have a good time DJ’ing whether it’s a crowd of 5, 50, or 500. I genuinely just love music so I’m always going to have a good time and if you’re with me, I promise you’ll be having a good time too!
