Today we’d like to introduce you to Dusty Pressley.
Hi Dusty, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Once I graduated hair school in 2019, I did what I was “supposed to do” which was get a job assisting at a salon then move up the ranks that way. The salon I ended up at wasn’t a fit and I ended up leaving. With no idea what I was going to do next my friend Steph told me to come work at her salon, Now her salon was booth rent and I only had like 1 client to my name and no idea how to run my own business. But she told me “We will figure it out,” and with that I started my independent hair stylist journey.
Now fast forward a year later, we are in the middle of the pandemic, we just got the ok to go back outside and I decided to leave the salon life for the suite life. I went into the suite with a friend and we decided to sign on a 3 year lease. This was in Downtown Fort Worth, right down the street from my job at DryBar. 11 months into our lease my friend and I decided to part ways, so I was left on my own with the suite. I was really a solo artist for the first time. It was the perfect time in a pandemic! Just me and my client in out own room! I was there for 3 years, then decided to move my business to Dallas!
Once I got into Dallas, I began to really hit my stride! I am a vivid specialist and blowout artist! Dallas is where The Haus of Wicked belongs! I work in Deep Ellum now, and I wouldn’t have the drive I have today if it wasn’t for my struggle years learning where I belong, and what I need to be doing to make my business a success.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Hell no!! There are no smooth roads in starting your own business and anyone who says there are is LYING!
I was living at home when I decided to start my business, which was a great idea because lord knows I wasn’t making any money for the first couple of years. Every single penny went back into the business. I work 1-2 extra jobs to support myself and the business.
Through hard work, marketing my ass off, and never shutting up about my business, I began to build a clientele and really make my name in the world.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known as the blowout master and vivid witch of Dallas!
I love love LOVE vivid colors. I really get to express my creativity in my craft. I always knew thats what I wanted to do, since it was Guy Tang who inspired me to get into hair school. Now people come in and sometimes they come with an idea but more often than not they let me have fun!
Another speciality I excel in is blowouts. From the beginning I knew I wanted to be good at blowouts because my thought process was “The cut can be great and the color could be amazing but if the blowout and style suck then no one is going to notice!” So I wanted to leave everyone loving their hair and style! That being said, ask any of my clients…. my blowouts last like a week! I had a client once get a blowout, get on a plane, go to Poland, got caught in the rain, came home and her hair was still a little curly! Insane I know!
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is knowing that I am making my own way in the world. I am setting my own goals and achieving them. I do not work for anyone, or answer to anyone but myself. If you are waiting for your sign to take the leap, this is it! Do it! Don’t wonder what if. Ask yourself Why not?
