Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Dunn.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My love for photography first started when I was eight years old. I would constantly search the house for my parents’ camera which they often used for work. When I would take off with it, I would shoot photos of everything I could, including people, landscape, and animals. It was just something I did for fun and didn’t really think much would come out of it – but when I was fifteen years old, I was able to shoot with a DSLR camera – a real professional camera – and that’s where it all took off. I found myself shooting couples, seniors and families and given opportunities to make an income, so I started my business – Somewhat Photography. I chose that name at the time because I didn’t think it would be an actual successful business – it was just something I did for fun. When I was seventeen, I was asked to shoot a wedding for a friend, and that’s where my love of weddings came from. I’ve been shooting weddings ever since and eventually changed my business name to a more professional and fitting name for what I love to do. I’m grateful for the ability to travel and shoot weddings from all over the US, but nothing compares to coming home and seeing those gorgeous Texas sunsets. I owe everything I have to my family and friends. Without their love and support from day one, I wouldn’t be here.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a business so young, I didn’t have a mentor or much of the resources that photographers have these days. I had to constantly research along with some trial and error. Thankfully most of the clients I had have been kind and understanding, and for that, I am grateful for. Now at twenty-eight, I have a wonderful group of photography friends I can count on for support and help.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have photographed pretty much everything under the sun which has been fun, but it has also helped me find what I absolutely love to do. I specialize in weddings and elopements. I find that doing weddings and smaller weddings allows me to really build a relationship with my couples and be able to serve them to the best of my ability. I’m most proud of the fact I can make my couples comfortable. I often get told “I’m not photogenic” or “I’m really awkward in front of the camera,” but I have a bag of tricks up my sleeve. After the session is over my couples will tell me that they loved their experience and it just felt like another date night. No awkwardness but a lot of goofiness and some sweet moments. I believe that is what sets me apart from other photographers is making more about the experience and making memories rather than just checking the box off your list.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future consists of adding video to my packages. My goal since day one has been to tell a story through images. Adding video will allow me to continue to tell stories through a different view.
