Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Lewis.
Hi Eric, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My older brother and I would do haircuts on each other when we were young teenagers. I got really good at it, so I started cutting my friends and other family members. I continued cutting hair through my high school years and into college as well. College is where I really thought about making a career as a barber. I basically became the go-to barber on campus. I even had regular business hours. After a couple of years in college, I relocated to Dallas from Arkansas where I enrolled at Ronny J’s Barber and Styling College. After 5 years of Barbering, I enrolled at Paul Mitchell the School Dallas where I became a licensed hairstylist. I combined my previous barbering experience with my new cosmetology skills and here I am today. I co-own Modern Barbering Academy with my wife. I get to share over 20 years of experience with the next generation of future barbers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not quite. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Firstly, getting to and from school was a challenge. I lived in North Dallas and commuted to barber school in Southern Dallas without a car. And I didn’t know how to ride the public transportation. Some days I had to get creative for a ride to school.
I opened my very first barbershop at the age of twenty-four. Five years later I closed it due to burnout. I literally did every job that needed to be done day to day by myself. After closing my first barbershop I learned I needed to build a solid team, especially other professional barbers. That’s when I realized I needed to open my own barber school.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Professional Barber that specialize in cutting all hair types, textures, and styles. I am most proud of founding Modern Barbering Academy with my wife. We have been operating for five years and have produced some of the best barbers in Dallas/Fort Worth. I think what sets me apart from others is my versatility. With my experience as a barber and a cosmetologist combined, I feel I have an advantage in understanding the dynamics regarding the fundamentals of men’s grooming and beyond.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is continuing to learn. I believe continuing to learn and being able to pivot in an ever-changing industry is key to having long-term success.
