Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Black.
Hi Gary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
This March marks my 30th anniversary in eyewear, and my career has always been driven by a deep appreciation for design, craftsmanship, and education. When I founded Black Optical, the goal was simple: curate eyewear from the world’s best independent designers, made from exceptional materials, and to deliver a true 5-star experience built on hospitality and expertise. Over the years we’ve grown, but that commitment hasn’t changed: thoughtful design, meaningful relationships, and helping people see, and feel, their best.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anything worth building comes with its challenges. Our journey hasn’t always been smooth. We have navigated economic shifts, industry changes, and the realities of growing an independent, design-driven business. There were moments that required resilience, tough decisions, and a lot of faith in our vision. But each challenge strengthened our commitment to quality, education, and hospitality, and ultimately helped shape the Black Optical experience into what it is today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Our work is rooted in eyewear. But it goes far beyond simply selling frames. At Black Optical, we specialize in curating niche, design-forward eyewear from the world’s best makers, and pairing that with education, craftsmanship, and a genuine 5-star client experience. We’re known for our commitment to quality, never settling for “good enough”, our relationships with designers, and the care we bring to every fitting and conversation.
I’m proud that Black Optical has evolved into a creative platform, not just a retail space. We collaborate with brands and artists, launch limited projects, and explore ideas that live outside traditional optical: from our performance-driven eyewear brand, Kuro Athletics, to objects like our candle and creative initiatives like the self-portrait project. All of these extensions are rooted in the same philosophy: celebrate design, support independent creativity, and create meaningful experiences for the people we serve.
What sets us apart is intention. We don’t chase trends or volume. We focus on craft, relationships, and thoughtful design that has purpose and longevity.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is to stay patient, stay curious, and trust the process. When you’re starting out, it can be tempting to chase growth or trends, but the real work is in building relationships, learning your craft, and showing up with integrity every day. Invest in education, understand the “why” behind the work, and surround yourself with people who inspire you. I’ve learned that the most meaningful progress happens slowly and intentionally, creating something worth celebrating.
