Today we’re excited to be connecting with Gunnice Osunwusi again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Gunnice, thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
I’m Gunnice Osunwusi, a freelance illustrator and Creative native to Dallas. When I’m not sketching and flexing my pen as a writer, I’m thinking up new concepts to tattoo bodies of all types here in the city. I’m always working to expand my know-how, but I’m naturally drawn to calligraphy, and bold, stylized anime.
Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
The more opportunities I’ve received to break out of my comfort zone and do larger scale work – guesting at a shop, designing and creating murals for peoples’ spaces – the more confident I’ve become. It’s all made me a real hermit, being so immersed and giving myself fully to the process in order to create real authentic, heart centered pieces. The art deserves my full attention, and I’m learning to be more open to devoting myself to it, free of fear, or too much censorship.
Alright, so let’s do something a bit more fast-paced and lighthearted. We call this our lightning round and we’ll ask you a few quick questions.
- Favorite Movie: Pearl (2022)
- Favorite Book: Outwitting the Devil, by Napoleon Hill
- Favorite TV Show: Neo Yokio
- Favorite Band or Artist: Rico Nasty
- As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up: An IRL Cheetah Girl
- Favorite Cartoon growing up: Bratz
What do you want people to remember about you and your brand? What are some of things that you feel are most important, unique, special, etc?
Longterm respect is earned – not just handed over – with consistency, and mutual respect for yourself and those you’re collaborating with. There’s not one, single person that’s the gatekeeper to this work, and the more I’ve adopted a mindset of seeking connection and building solid relationships, while going at my own individual pace – no need to rush – the smoother the journeys been.
The sooner I’ve taken responsibility for unlearning helplessness, and truly being my own authority in order to show up and let my inner creative live, the better. You don’t need permission granted to show up and make mistakes. Just keep showing up.
