Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanna Adams.
Hi Hanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I started in Community Action over 26 years go I had no idea what I was signing up for. As I better understood the history of Community Action dating back to President LBJ and the impact we have had over the years to families and communities I knew this was much more than a job, it is a calling. My life has had many obstacles from homelessness, abuse, to abandonment which prepared me to give those we serve a better understanding of their lives. Being able to use those obstacles as launching pad to educate and advocate for others that may be going through similar circumstances. I believe if you use past experiences to help others than it gives them true value.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to assisting others to become self sufficient is an unpaved road. Struggles personally for me was learning that I should not be ashamed of my past but use it to educate others that we are not all born equal, our starting line was moved but we too can be successful with the right can of mentors and grit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a leader of a large non-profit that assist people with their path to self sufficiency and advocate to leaders and communities to understand the complexities of poverty. We are not fighting low income people but the systems setup that keep people down.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like areas where all people can gather to listen to birds and children play. Dislike that their are not enough places where all people can gather and feel like they are part of the planning for everyone.
