Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Potts.
Hi Hannah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Claremore, Oklahoma, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene from the University of Oklahoma. I practiced dental hygiene for years in Oklahoma and then in Texas. After marrying and having two children, I decided to become a stay-at-home mom in 2018. I loved being home with my kids and serving my family in that capacity. During the pandemic and immediately after, I felt like God began to stir my heart in various ways. I felt like He had something else planned for me, and I decided to wait for His direction. In the fall of 2022, when both of my kids had upcoming birthday parties, I challenged myself to make their party cookies and cakes. I had never been a baker, but figured I would give it a try. As it turns out, I thoroughly enjoyed creating cookies and cakes. My newfound hobby led to hours and hours of self-teaching, trial and error. Eventually, I knew that this was where God wanted me to invest my efforts, all the while staying home with my kids.
I think that my work as a dental hygienist prepared me for the steady hands & attention to detail needed when decorating cookies and cakes. Dental hygiene is an art form in itself. As a clinician, you want your patients to feel cared about, to be comfortable, and to leave feeling confident in their smiles and overall health. As a hygienist, I felt compelled to deliver the highest quality of care and have the best patient interactions possible. I think this mindset translated to my baking. My goal is to provide my customers with the highest quality of baked goods and the best customer service possible. I want each customer to feel like they are truly valued by my small business because they are! When I began to feel passionate about the baking and creating process, I knew it was time to take the next step. Several months later, I launched “Hannah Baked”. It is such an honor and privilege to play a small role in the life events and celebrations of my customers. I am so thankful to God for the opportunity.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although not always smooth, my baking/small business endeavor has been a blast!! I didn’t fully understand how much time is required in the world of baking. Striking the balance between work and home is probably my biggest challenge now. I spend hours upon hours with each and every order. On occasion, I will spend a full week fulfilling a single order. I want my designs to be above and beyond! My desire is for every single customer to be THRILLED with the work that I have created. That being said, my customer base has been so wonderful and supportive of my small business. They encourage me to keep creating and making beautiful, delicious things!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a home baker or “cottage” baker based in Coppell, Texas. I specialize in decorated sugar cookies and celebratory custom cakes. I create my designs based on what my customer envisions and desires. I think that my attention to detail sets my small business apart. If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t leave my kitchen. I truly strive for excellence in every aspect of “Hannah Baked.” I am so grateful that my customers trust my creative vision. It is always so cool to hear, “I trust you!” or “Do whatever you want!!!”. Designing and making cookies/cakes is so much fun for me, and I am so honored that my customers trust me to deliver something wonderful.
Additionally, I pride myself on the taste of my sugar cookies! I love the taste of my cakes, but I have worked tirelessly to make sure that my cookies are delicious! In the beginning stages of launching “Hannah Baked,” my husband said, “If you’re going to sell decorative cookies, make sure they taste good.” It stuck with me. I spent hours tweaking my recipe until I was consistently baking soft, delicious, and beautiful sugar cookies. Of course, my husband was always happy to be my “taste tester.” I constantly hear that my cookies “taste as good as they look.” I know this has played a huge part in establishing a loyal customer base.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I don’t “think about luck” or consider myself “lucky.” I am confident that God has ordained my steps and will continue to do so. He has been faithful to me over the years, and I know that He will continue to be faithful. I am so undeserving of any accolade or acknowledgment in my business (or otherwise). Any success that I have, I fully credit to Him.
