Check Out Heather Lampe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Lampe.

Heather Lampe

Hi Heather, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a Texas native, born in Kerrville, but I grew up in a small midwest town near St. Louis. I’ve been sewing and drawing since before I can remember. After graduating Purdue University with a degree in Apparel Design & Technology, I worked in a custom bridal boutique in St. Louis until I could save up enough to move to Dallas. I always knew I wanted to come back to Texas. I spent about 6 years designing handbags and novelty wallets at Fossil Group, which was an amazing experience. I’m incredibly grateful to the designers that mentored me in those early years and everything I learned from them. It was also during my time at Fossil that I started using my lunch break to doodle in a sketchbook every day, which ended up leading me to freelance illustration. I’m currently doing both fashion design and illustration freelance work as well as teaching aerial fitness classes, which I highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun alternative fitness option with a supportive community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many tough times and tough years, but I’m fortunate to have relentless optimism and some wonderful humans in my life, which have gotten me through anything life throws at me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a bit of a multi-faceted artist. I’m a fashion designer specializing in handbags, active wear, and special occasion gowns, as well as an illustrator specializing in maximalism florals and line work. I’m also a certified aerial pole instructor. One thing I’m most proud of is the tarot deck which I spent about 2.5 years illustrating. It started as a personal project to keep me busy during a tough time, and ended up being one of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on. One thing that differentiates me from others is a strong passion for knowledge and researching, which is why I loved illustrating the tarot deck. It gave me the chance to research each of the cards, the symbolism from various different cultures, and the history of tarot, which I used to create rose-themed custom illustrations.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently making a shift and looking for an apprenticeship to learn tattooing. I’ve spent about 2 years researching the industry and putting together a portfolio. The industry in Dallas is incredibly competitive, but I’m excited for the new adventure and the chance to learn from and collaborate with so many talented artists.
