Check Out Ian Griffin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Griffin

Hi Ian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an old soldier that grew up in Pittsburg, Texas. I served 31 years in the army and returned home to Pittsburg to retire in 2020. After a few years into retirement, I started writing fiction novels. I wrote the Rick & Katja Spy Series and three non-spy books that take place in East Texas. My spy books are set in Kitzingen, Germany, where I was stationed for five years. I am just an old soldier who relishes writing about the complexities of life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh, the journey of writing is never a smooth road. I have learned that getting your name out there is a challenge. I have also found out that I had to change my process in writing. For my first book, I spent 1/2 my time writing and 1/2 my time editing. That is a bad formula. Now, I spend about 1/6th of my time writing and then 5/6th of the editing. Every writer is different, but I like to focus on the characters and the story. I never thought of myself winning any awards in writing. I just wanted to tell a good story. An author friend called me after reading my book “The Story of Briar.” He said, “Ian, I have read your first two spy books, and then I read this book. You need to submit it now for awards. It is really a great book.” I personally thought he was just giving me a pick-me-up speech, is all. I would follow his advice, and wow, he was right.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in writing realistic spy novels and southern fiction, coming-of-age stories, and romantic novels. All my books have a strong female lead. Each has some connection to Texas, and they all have to have their twists. I am extremely proud of the books I write that I have personally been and lived in the places where they take place. I am very proud to be able to share a story and people enjoy it.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Coming from the military, especially the army, we have a unique thing taught to us. We truly don’t know the phrase “I can’t.” No matter what the challenge is or how crazy it sounds that someone gives us, we simply say, “Okay I will do it.” I believe that right there is something that I am able to utilize the most, the determination to succeed.
