Check Out Jamie Mayberry’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Mayberry.

Jamie “Jay-May” Mayberry

Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Detroit, MI. Both my parents worked for the City of Detroit and gave my siblings and I a solid foundation to build on. I grew up the middle child, and that played a part in my formidable years. Since I didn’t get the attention of the oldest or youngest, I acted out and did things to create attention. Sometimes good, but often not so good. I thank God, and I’m grateful to have made it this far!

Hip Hop music played a major role in my upbringing. I wrote my first rhyme around the age of 15. I used to say them in front of my friends in the neighborhood and school. Someone would make a beat on the lunch table or beatbox, and those who could rap would spit something. Whenever I felt inspired, I would write lyrics and just create songs. Most are still inside random notebooks in boxes in my closet, but I eventually started officially recording music in my early twenties.

I joined the Army 6 months after graduating high school with a plan of doing 3 years then returning back home to Detroit. A wife, two children, six duty stations, two deployments, twenty years, 8 months, and five days later, I decided to end my military career at Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), Texas. The military taught me great skills that I probably would not have learned if my path was different. I’ve worked with some great people through the years and would not trade that experience in at all.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road I traveled on had already been paved by my parents and grandparents. They laid down the asphalt so technically, I only needed to get over the internal issues I dealt with. Things such as low self-esteem, not thinking I deserved a good life, or not feeling worthy, etc. I had a good example to look towards, and once I realized my potential then it was on full throttle from there! In no way am I saying it was an easy road, but once I adopted the right mindset, created some success habits, and applied them, that helped move me forward.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My goal was to work in the IT field after retiring from the Army, so I earned my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Information Systems Management. Most jobs required a certification, so I then earned the CompTIA A+ and Security+ certifications. My love and passion for music is what drove me to get my Master of Fine Arts in Media Design. This has helped me gain a better eye for detail on things and helped me become a more well-rounded artist.

I create music with an intention to elevate the consciousness of my audience. My aim is to speak to their spirit which in turn will uplift and inspire in the process. I recently released a project titled ‘SEASONS // Summer”. This is the first of a 4-part music series. It features uplifting and motivating hip-hop songs for those of us who appreciate that type of vibe and sound. On this project, I have a track titled “Chasin” that features Rick Ross, and I really hope people get a chance to listen and enjoy it!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was going to spend the night at my Grandparents’ house. This was always great and one of my favorite memories because at Grandma’s house, my brother, sister, and I each had our own rooms! Our grandparents always had the good cereal and extra snacks, so it was always fun being there! I had a good childhood. My parents work hard and made sure they provided for us so that we never lacked anything. We may not have got everything we wanted, but we never lacked for anything.
