Check Out Janay Kelly-Grant’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janay Kelly-Grant.

Janay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My academic journey commenced at Howard University, where I pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. Initially aspiring to become a pediatrician, I enrolled in premedical courses. However, upon graduation and commencing medical school preparation, I realized that the field did not resonate with my aspirations.
During this period, I gained valuable experience as a medical scribe at a hospital, where I observed and learned extensively within the emergency room. My tenure at Medical City Dallas spanned approximately one year, during which I developed a particular interest in psychiatric patients.
Recognizing my passion for mental health, I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Counseling and obtain licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Subsequently, I embarked on an internship as a primary therapist at a partial hospitalization program.
While working at this organization, I simultaneously dedicated myself to establishing my own private practice. In February 2023, I successfully opened The Way Through Therapy. Currently, I am employed full-time as a private practice psychotherapist specializing in anxiety, depression, and relationship issues.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey was not easy, but I would say that my experience was relatively smoother compared to others. I was trained by highly experienced and supportive clinicians who provided me with a wealth of information and assistance that helped me avoid making similar mistakes. I was able to learn from their experiences and incorporate their knowledge into my own approach.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a private practice clinician, I work with individuals aged 16 to 50, supporting them on their healing journeys and personal growth. I provide helpful techniques, coping skills, and insights to assist them in their journey. Having been an intensive primary therapist, I have extensive experience with severe mental health disorders, including bipolar disorder, psychosis, suicide, and self-harm. Currently, I specialize in anxiety and depression, particularly those who struggle with their relationships.

One of the things that sets me apart from most therapists is my authenticity and my ability to create a safe space where my clients can fully be themselves during sessions. I cultivate an engaging, humorous, and intentional environment that fosters open communication and trust. I am most proud of the consistency and progress my clients have made throughout their treatment. Knowing that they trust me and continue to seek help by returning to therapy fills me with immense pride.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
My mom always told me I was a “good kid.” I played sports and read a lot. Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my mom, as we were just the two of us. Many people also told me I was very sensitive. As I grew older, I realized that being sensitive wasn’t a bad thing, even though it was often portrayed as such. I’ve learned to use my sensitivity as a superpower in my career, allowing me to empathize with others.
