Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Bruno.
Hi Jasmine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started at a rave I went to years ago, around 2018 in Tyler Texas. I saw some girls come in with these light-up hulahoops, and I just HAD to get one too! And so, I did, I followed tons of hooper accounts on Instagram, and practiced a lot. Before I got into ” The rave scene” I did hare drugs (meth) for about a year and it was awful. Obviously, don’t do drugs kids, but when I started raving, I quit meth, and essentially replaced it with Molly (MDMA) and thought that going to raves and drugs was why I liked hooping so much.
Once covid hit though and all venues shut down for almost a whole year, I realized I LOVED flowarts for so many more reasons with such better meanings 🖤 flow is a physical and mental release, it’s the perfect balance between focus and getting lost in movement and time. Flowarts helped me thru my past addictions, instead of getting bored and looking for the next party, I’d play with my hulahoops and work on my art form more. When your emotions are everywhere and you need a healthy release, flowarts is the perfect escape in my opinion. I’ve been clean off all drugs since covid started and its thanks to my passion for hooping 🥰
I posted my flow videos on my Instagram to share with other hoopers, like when I first started and to see my own progress, and my love for this art form only grew with the community that comes with it, the opportunities to make this a career as an entertainer, and the outpour of love that comes with flowarts. I’m currently a freelance entertainer. I provide LED performances, for anything you could want! From birthday parties to clubs and festivals, I’m currently booked to workflow Faire 2, a medieval-themed music and art festival happening at the beginning of 2022 here local to DFW! I’m extremely grateful for how and when this craft came into my life and how drastically it changed me in the best ways possible, I highly recommend anyone to look into it for themselves, follow me on Insta if you’d like @_chronic_flow_
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think any hobby starts out rocky honestly. You have to suck at something, think about quitting and giving up, and choose not to over and over, to keep practicing to get to a place of confidence in yourself. I personally struggled with social media and flowarts. Social media is just another addition and I would get obsessed with my follower count/views/likes and get in a huge rut when I felt my videos didn’t do as good as I felt they should. I placed my own worth on if others liked my craft. I had to look in myself and figure out why I felt like I needed that outside validation and realized that I don’t. It’s a passion of mine that I’m just sharing with the 🌎 and once I freed myself from that mindset, jobs for performances started coming in, we’re our own biggest obstacles in life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a led performer. I provide entertainment and ambiance for people and businesses. I specialize in hulahoops but I’ve also dabbled in: staff, poi, ropedart, lightwhips, silk fans, and multi hoops. What I’m known for would definitely be my hoop tech. There’s tons of different flow styles from circus style, to Dancy, to tech. And I love me some tech! Techie hooping is very technical, you have to move your body and hoop around each other in extremely unique and fun ways! Neck tech and leg work are my favorites to practice and I’d have to say those types of moves are what I’m most known for in flowarts. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come with this creative outlet. I’ve grown so much not just I’m my craft but as a person. I’m extremely socially awkward, hooping and preforming for a crowd I can share my love with, and being in that spot light has helped me come out of my shell bit by bit. And I’d say my passion for my craft is definitely what sets me apart from other led artists. Some people know flowarts is mind-blowing when you first see it, and put forth their most basic beginner level cookie cutter moves and don’t put effort into their gigs cause “who cares I’m getting paid” and I’m the opposite I get a high off of people being bewildered by my flow and having to come up and ask about what it is. How to get into it etc. and spreading the love and knowledge of flowarts.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m actually extremely open about my past and struggles etc. on my page, but I think one thing people would be surprised to learn about me is that I have scoliosis, it basically means instead of my back being straight (from a front-on view) it’s curved and shaped like an S. I was diagnosed when I was around 11, and now at 24 it’s progressed to a 25+ degree curve between my shoulders and a 47-degree curve in my lower back. I have a more severe case meaning my shoulders are uneven, my hips are rotated and my left leg is shorter than the other, my left ribs also stick out further cause if I keep twisting *hopefully not* it could end up crushing my lungs and eventually heart. There’s no cure for it, the only thing I could do would be attempt to get a spinal fusion surgery, and even those come undone and don’t work all the time. I do yoga and get nightly back rubs from my amazing man to keep the aches under control 🥰
