Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenasia Chavez.
Jenasia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
February 2nd was the last time I saw my brother after our dad’s birthday celebration. I was struggling and told him I wanted to give up tattooing because it felt so hard. He wouldn’t let me—he believed in me, showed me his tattoo ideas, and made me promise to let him be my first model. He died the next day after being hit by a wrong-way driver & then immediately hit again by a distracted driver from behind. That night, I picked up my machine again and never stopped. I promised myself I’d live authentically and make this life worth it—for both of us. I’m not just surviving this—I want to build something meaningful out of it for my community & my family. And that promise I made to my brother. I am keeping it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My tattoo journey hasn’t been a smooth road. Over the past year I’ve been navigating a lot of grief and major life changes—surviving a serious car wreck in June, losing my brand-new car that held deep memories with my brother, supporting my family, moving in July, losing a friend in October and a family member in November, and then being told my job was closing in December.
Through all of that, I never stopped creating. I continued making art and practicing tattooing even when life was heavy.
Being hired by Nood Wax was a blessing I’m truly grateful for. They believed in me, gave me guidance, and helped me learn the business side of tattooing. Gratitude and hardship can exist at the same time—and both are part of my story.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I basically wear three creative hats and one medical one, and people just don’t automatically clock that when they meet me. Tattooing is something I’m deeply committed to, and I’ve chosen to build it sustainably alongside my full-time career.
By day I’m a full-time optometric technician. Outside of work hours and on weekends, I’m tattooing, making art, and running a pop-up art & thrift. It’s a lot—but it’s what I love.
If you’re into art, vintage, or creative chaos, check out my pop-up project: @artfosale.retro.popup . I’m drawn to creating one-of-a-kind work—pieces that don’t exist anywhere else. My goal is always to design something made specifically for you, something meaningful you can hold close for a lifetime.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Your goals don’t need approval. You get one life to explore your potential, and honoring that calling—no matter how long it takes—is never wasted time.
