Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrica Durham.
Hi Jerrica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’m 36 years old, a mother of 4 boys I was raised in South Dallas by my aunt she did the very best she could mom and dad wasn’t really around. What inspired me to braid was watching my mom when I was very little she was just as good as me probably better, I just picked up the skills and taught myself. Started making money when I was 11 years old charging 5.00. I didn’t see a future living in my neighborhood at the time of me having my first child at 17, so my oldest son’s grandmother took me in and really showed me how to be a mother and provide. During that time my oldest son’s father passed away leaving me to raise them on my own and including their little brothers I have now I knew I had a skill that could pretty much help me financially but I never took it seriously. My best friend at the time was a Braider and use to always tell me “Girl if you don’t quit that job and braid full time” I finally stepped out on faith and started using the skills God gave me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not smooth at all. Wasn’t raised by my parents. Lost my children’s father at a young age and dealing with mental challenges throughout life
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Braider; I specialize in designs and techniques. Nothing really sets me apart from others we are all the same, some may have started later than me and are perfecting their craft and once they get better, they will be with the rest of us.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My character, my techniques, my personality, and my goofiness. I’m always an open book and never think I’m better than nobody
