Check Out Jessica Johnson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Johnson.

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Southlake, Texas in the 80’s when it was mostly farmland. I graduated from Southlake Carroll and attended the University of Arkansas as a scholarship track and field athlete. I retired from athletics after the 2004 Olympic Trials and enrolled at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, I spent 10 years in as a small animal general practitioner in veterinary medicine. I enjoyed it, but had a particular passion for oral surgery. I went back to school in 2017, beginning a residency in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery while raising three young kids. In 2022, I became a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. Currently, I am the only Board Certified Veterinary Dentist practicing full time in Dallas/Fort Worth. I have two residents who are almost done with their training as well.

I am passionate about learning. In 2025, I started an oral medicine fellowship offered for 3 veterinary dentists a year through the University of Penn’s human dental program. This is a part of a One Health initiative that is a global, collaborative approach recognizing that human, animal, plant, and environmental health are interconnected.

I practice at Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of North Texas where I spend most of my time in clinics, treating patients. I treat cats and dogs for a variety of issues including maxillofacial trauma, oral tumors, malocclusions, periodontal disease and endodontics to name a few. We have a training facility attached to our clinic where I teach new veterinary graduates the basics in veterinary dentistry between 2-4 days a month.

This year I will be speaking an a number of conferences including the European Veterinary Dental Forum in Portugal. I love the role I play in veterinary medicine. I love to teach and I enjoy the myriad of cases that present to our practice.

My primary passion is performing oral surgery. Helping my patients have a better quality of life, and helping their families is incredibly rewarding. I am fortunate to work with some of the best technicians who are caring and passionate about the care we provide.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Not really. I got divorced during my first year as a resident and became the primary care provider for 3 amazing young kids. With the help of my parents and friends, I was able to complete the program to achieve my goal of becoming a specialist. When you are raising a family, working, and you are back in school, it takes a village. We made it through and this has opened a number of opportunities that are fun and exciting. This year, I will be teaching in Hawaii, Portugal, and a few other places. I will also spend most days in Flower Mound, taking care of our communities pets and working dogs. Life is funny. I am enjoying my professional journey and look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am proud of my team of veterinarians, technicians, assistants and client service representatives. I have worked in a dozen veterinary practices in my career. The people I work with are smart, hard working, and passionate about their role. I cannot be the best practitioner I want to be without them. I am honored to work alongside them.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have many wonderful childhood memories. One year, my parents, my brother and I went to New Mexico where we stayed in a remote cabin and fished, hiked, and explored. Between the trout fishing and the beauty of the outdoors, I think fondly of my time with my family.
