Check Out JJ ’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to JJ.

Hi JJ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with my B.A. in Communications, I wanted to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. I grew up playing a number of sports and even played collegiate softball. I had dreams of working in television and becoming a sports commentator and/or reporter. After applying to numerous companies and no responses, I decided to broaden my mindset of working in media and apply to radio stations in Dallas. Months later I heard back from the Promotions Director at The New Hot 93.3 about a job on the promotions team. I worked for about a year as a Promotions Assistant before making my way into the studio and volunteering to produce for our afternoon host Crisco Kidd. Crisco was the first person to really teach me the basics of radio. I was learning how to create a show on-air, build a brand, and be a personality. I was still on the promotions team while working with the afternoon show; waiting and hoping an opportunity would come my way. After years of hard work and doubts, I got the call to train on-air for overnights. Shortly after I moved up to doing weekends and fill-in for the day parts from time to time. I’m also known as the movie enthusiast and critic for Hot 93.3.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
If you don’t face a little adversity, is it even a journey? I think adversity is what makes us stronger and in the end, when we look back at all we accomplished, we know then it was all worth it. Some of my struggles have to do within and getting out of my own head. Just trusting myself, letting go, and not overthinking. As I grow in this industry, I’m finding it easier to really trust myself and the process.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a radio personality for The New Hot 93.3, I hope the listeners just laugh and have a good time with me. I love chatting about pop culture, community events, and movies. I want whoever is listening to feel something when they turn me on the radio. I love being out in the community whether it’s station events, concerts, or doing my “JJ’s Cinema Takeover.” Accomplishing my goals and doing what I love in my hometown gives me so much joy and a sense of pride.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family matters most to me. They’ve always supported and guided me through this crazy journey. I know family is supposed to do that but not a lot of people are lucky enough to have that type of support like I do. I don’t know where I’d be without them and I’m so grateful for them helping me get this far in my career.
