Today we’d like to introduce you to Joana Rodriguez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born and raised in Fort Worth Texas, photography has had my heart for as long as I can remember.
When I was around 10 years old, I was constantly playing with the camera on my mom’s phone, convinced I was already a photographer hehe. Whenever my little nieces and nephews came over, I’d hang up blankets as backdrops, gather random props from around the house, and turn my living room into a mini photo studio. I still have those photos today, and looking back, it’s funny to see where it all began.
When I was 13, my sister gave me my first Nikon camera for my birthday. I spent years taking candid photos of my friends, family, and pets, capturing everyday moments that are still some of my favorite memories. A couple of years later, my best friend surprised me with another camera for my quinceañera, and from that point on, it rarely left my side.
As I got older, I started taking photography more seriously. I created my photography Instagram page and began photographing my friend’s graduation sessions when we were seniors graduating high school, birthday celebrations, and even my sister’s wedding. Even when I was shooting and editing on my phone, the encouragement I received from friends and family reminded me that photography was exactly where I was meant to be.
When it all took off..
On my 20th birthday, my family surprised me with a camera to help me finally turn my dream into reality. They told me they had always believed in me and wanted to invest in my passion. I exchanged it for my dream camera, started offering affordable Christmas sessions, and slowly built relationships with amazing clients who trusted me to capture some of the most important moments of their lives.
Today, that’s still the heart behind everything I do.
My goal is to give you more than beautiful photos, I want to give you an experience where you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself. Years from now, I hope you look back at your gallery, smile, and remember those moments.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it has been a pretty smooth journey, but of course, like any journey, there have been a few bumps along the road. More than anything, though, I feel extremely blessed by how quickly everything has grown. In just three years, my clientele has skyrocketed, and sometimes I genuinely have to take a step back and realize how far this business has come.
Photography has taught me that there are so many parts of running a business that you don’t see from the outside. In the beginning, I had to teach myself everything, from figuring out pricing and editing to marketing, communication, and simply learning how to run a business. I actually loved being able to learn everything on my own and figure out what worked best for me.
One thing I have always made a priority, though, is communication. I truly believe that is one of the things that makes you stand out. It’s not only about the experience your clients have during their session, but also about how you make them feel. Making them feel confident, comfortable, cared for, and excited starts from the very first conversation, before you even meet them, and continues even after their session is over.
I also feel like a lot of the business side came naturally to me because I’ve always had someone to look up to. My sister, the owner of BrowsxThalia, is a business owner herself, so watching her build her own business and learning from her has been such a blessing. She has given me advice and tips along the way, and having the support of my family and amazing clients has meant more to me than I can put into words. I’m incredibly grateful that I’ve never felt like I was completely figuring everything out alone.
Of course, there have been seasons where I’ve felt overwhelmed trying to balance shooting, editing, answering inquiries, managing clients, and keeping up with the business side of things. But even those moments have taught me something. They’ve taught me to trust myself, set better boundaries, continue improving my craft, and remind myself why I started in the first place.
Overall, I wouldn’t describe my journey as a rocky one. I genuinely feel incredibly blessed with how things have unfolded for me. The challenges I have faced have simply helped me grow into a better photographer and, more importantly, a better business owner. Every time I’ve had to figure something out, it has given me a little more confidence in what I’m building. Looking at where I started three years ago compared to where I am today, I’m just incredibly grateful. I truly feel like this is exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a portrait and lifestyle photographer based in the Fort Worth area, and I specialize in capturing all of life’s meaningful moments, from couples, engagements, proposals, maternity and newborns to families, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and everything in between. I love that my work allows me to photograph so many different seasons of people’s lives.
What I’m probably most known for is creating warm, timeless images while also making my clients feel genuinely comfortable in front of the camera. I want my clients to look back at their photos and not only love how they look, but remember how they felt in that moment. I think photography is so much more than taking a pretty picture; it’s about creating an experience that people will remember.
I’m especially proud of how much I’ve been able to build in just three years. I started completely self-taught, learning everything from shooting and editing to posing, client communication, pricing, marketing, and the business side of photography. Watching my clientele grow so quickly has been something I’m incredibly grateful for, especially knowing how much of it came from simply putting myself out there and continuously learning.
I think what sets me apart is how much I care about the entire client experience. I put a lot of effort into communication before, during, and after a session because I want my clients to feel taken care of from the moment they inquire with me. I want them to feel confident, comfortable, and excited, not just about their photos, but about the entire experience of working with me.
I also think being able to photograph such a wide variety of sessions has helped me develop a really versatile style. Every client and every story is different, and I love being able to adapt to that while still keeping my work recognizable as my own.
Ultimately, I’m most proud that I’ve created something that feels like me. Photography started as something I loved, and it has grown into a business that allows me to meet incredible people, document some of the most important moments of their lives, and make a living doing something I genuinely enjoy. I never want to take that for granted.
How do you define success?
I define success as being proud of what I’ve built and genuinely enjoying the life that comes with it. Of course, growing my business, having a strong clientele, and being financially successful are all things I’m proud of, but I don’t think those things alone define success.
For me, success is having clients trust me with some of the most important moments of their lives and knowing that I was able to give them an experience they’ll remember. It’s seeing a returning client come back to me years later or having someone recommend me to their family and friends because they loved their experience so much.
I also think success is being able to look back at where I started and realize how much I’ve learned and grown. I’m completely self-taught, so being able to build a business from the ground up and turn something I love into my career is something I’ll always be incredibly proud of. I’ve had quite a handful of viral posts on my instagram, it just feels amazing seeing people in different countries view, interact and love my work.
At the end of the day, success to me is having the freedom to create, connect with people, continue growing, and do something that genuinely makes me happy. If I can continue doing that while making people feel confident and preserving memories they’ll have forever, I consider myself very successful.
