Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Green.
Hi Joel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Absolutely! So I became interested in filmmaking in high school and learned more in community college, and then I started collaborating with my good friend Rene Garcia and his production brand Renefilms where I produced my first short film Paranoid in 2019 (which we remade in 2021) But the pandemic hit, and I felt really lost, and I had a grand vision for a web series I wanted to make, but filmmaking is hard to say the least so in the meantime I wanted to try my hand at improv and from there I found my comedy community, which has really helped me find my way and even more so when I began doing sketch comedy, which is now my passion even more so that I can combine it with my passion of filmmaking!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the biggest obstacles for me have been the pandemic and my own struggles with social anxiety and Aspergers syndrome, which make it difficult to pursue things like stand-up comedy (which I’ve done some of but not a whole lot) and scheduling/planning which is integral to everything, especially film, not to mention the monetary obstacles. But my friends have helped me a lot, and I’ve grown so much since I first started improv I have really found my footing and made connections that have helped with these struggles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My two main passions are comedy and film, and I want to combine the two as much as I can. Pursuing sketch comedy with my troupe Rent Free Comedy has opened the door for this as I perform with so many talented individuals. I love to take comedy from the stage and put it to video. I think so far, what I’m most proud of is our troupe. We are such a cohesive group of friends, and you can see our chemistry come out on stage and on screen. And I also think that’s what sets me apart from others; what I do is homegrown and organic because it’s with friends, and I think that fuels the passion and makes it all work out.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always open to networking and collaborating on short films, scrips, and sketch comedy. If you have any ideas for funny sketches or bits, I’d love to collab and see what we can accomplish!
