Today we’d like to introduce you to Kage
Hi Kage, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts with my father. His name is S1, a super producing legend from Waco, who has worked with Kanye, Drake, Beyonce, Gladys Knight, Lil Uzi, etc. He led as a role model for not only me but anyone that was around him. Growing up in such an inspiring environment made it extremely easy to gravitate towards music; therefore, I began my career as a producer at the age of 9. I went on to produce for Lupe Fiasco, Miguel, Denzel Curry, Kaash Paige, and more and moved to Pasadena, California for college and to pursue my ideas of success at the time. I quickly learned that the chase involved in getting placements and the fact your connections mattered over who you are as a person and what you have to offer didn’t sit well with me. It put me into a bad mental space that caused me to miss out on opportunities from being in my head rather than being present. Feeling as if I failed, I decided to put production on the back burner, still feeling like it was a sure thing regardless which path I took, to put more into my relationships and my artistry so I moved back to Dallas. Through the 4-5 years I’ve been back, I’ve been able to build new ideas of success and be more grateful for the impact and imprint I’m leaving as we speak rather than chasing bigger accolades. I took a lot of advice that either helped or hindered but decisions always feel the best following my gut. So thats where we’re at! Just following my gut, sharing my story through art that pushes boundaries and create conversations that can bring us a step closer to understanding each other. I have also stepped into film with my creative agency ‘Bonkers Studios’, where me and my team focus on bringing the feeling and art of storytelling back into music videos, advertisements, and film. I’m excited to expand more on everything throughout 2025. To God be the Glory for everything we’ve accomplished to this point and beyond it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. I have always been very confident as a person and in my music but something about my time in California kind of killed it. I must’ve lost myself in the chase. So much so that I even started telling people i don’t want to make music anymore and explored more of my talents. But of course I never truly stopped. I’ve been documenting my experience this whole time and crafting a sound only I could produce. Even as I began to crack a code I wasn’t satisfied and eventually started to distract myself because that was easier than being overwhelmed by the pressure I had put on myself. I think it’s funny though because most of my life I’ve felt like this golden child who is probably gonna breeze through life but I heard a quote when I was 18 or 19 that said “A smooth sea doesn’t build a skilled sailer”, and it change my perspective completely. In that moment I asked God for all the struggles that followed. But indeed a skilled sailer was built.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am mainly known for my production but I am a recording artist, sound designer, creative director, director, film editor, event curator, etc. Really a one stop shop; looking forward to putting some of those hats down in the future but I want to do all I can now to help build a community with artists that care. Right now, I’m just genuinely proud of who I am becoming and my relationship with God. It has been a spiritual roller coaster for me but I finally have my own relationship and not one based off others’. Last but not least, I feel like my mind sets me apart. I think I can offer a perspective that isn’t looked from often. Not to say it’s a better perspective, just different.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First God, because He is the reason for all things so He shall receive the glory for all. Second, my family for setting such a great foundation for me to grow on, always allowing me to express myself freely, and showing me such unconditional love that I can’t help but be a mirror of that. I would also like to thank mentors that have been angels for me throughout this journey such as Rhyme Fest, my 10th grade English teacher Doris Morehead, Jeannetta Collier, Tane Runo, and many more. Also shout out to my friends and peers that are on the same mission. It’s exciting to witness the avengers assembling before they’re even called to.
