Check Out Karla Fuentes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Fuentes.

Hi Karla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember I wanted to be some kind of doctor. When I got to my senior year (2012) I started to doubt what I wanted to do in life but I started college anyway, went for 2 years, and quit. a couple months later started technical school then quit after 3 months and realized the medical field wasn’t my passion, it wasn’t what I was looking for. Took like a year off, I even got my CDL and drove trucks for a bit. It wasn’t until 2016 that I was in my kitchen that I realized that I loved to cook and serve people. I decided to get into culinary school in Puerto Rico and when I graduated, I moved to Florida (2018). That’s where I go to Baking and Pastry school “just to learn some basic stuff” and ended up loving it more. From there decided I wanted my own business and started baking from home in 2019. Fast forward to 2021, you know pandemic and all the business wasn’t really going so in September I move to Mansfield, TX looking for better options and more opportunity to grow. So here we are Sweet Temptations up and running from home thanks to god and the support of my family. Many ups, downs, and lots of bumps on the road but we are slowly growing.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been easy at all. I’m a single mom with 2 kids under 2 plus running a small business by myself so it is a pretty big challenge, although not impossible. Also, I’ve had some personal issues that led me to move here to Texas but the best decision I made because my business went from maybe 1 or 2 cakes a month and some other desserts here and there over 2 yrs. in Florida to 3-5 cakes a week and some more desserts every week in the 5 months I’ve been here. So, I would say despite the bumps on the road it has been pretty good and a great learning experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Sweet Temptations is a home-based bakery, that specializes in Puerto Rican desserts (cream cheese/guava pastries, flan, cookies, etc.) and cakes but do serve other sweets such as cupcakes, cake pops, and more for birthday parties, weddings, baby showers, etc. I am born and raised in Puerto Rico so I love that I get to bring here a little bit from home to my community. I’m proud of how far I’ve come from not liking this line of work to it being the thing I now love most doing. Every day I keep learning whether it is new recipes, new designs, or new techniques, but I don’t stop learning and perfecting everything I do to keep my customers happy and get farther and better each day.
