Hi Kinsye, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Alvarado, where I discovered my passion for dance and developed a love for helping my classmates get their hair ready for the stage. When it came time to decide on a career path, I realized that I wanted to make people feel beautiful. This led me to enroll in hair school. While I was studying, I worked as an assistant for my mom at a trucking company, balancing daytime work with evening classes. I eventually graduated, passed all my exams, and obtained my license.
In my search for a salon, I explored a few options, but each opportunity fell through for various reasons. One day, feeling discouraged and frustrated, I called a charming salon that popped up as the top result when I searched for “salons near me.” It was Hair with Flair. I expressed to the incredibly kind woman who answered the phone that I wanted to specialize in curly hair, but everyone around me had dismissed that dream as unrealistic in our area. However, curly hair is everywhere!
She encouraged me to come by the salon to meet the team and discuss the possibility of renting a space. By the end of the day, I had a job there! It’s been a year now, and I have had the privilege of working alongside the amazing curly hair stylist, Amber Ainsworth, who has become a close friend and mentor. She has taught me everything she knows and truly took me under her wing. The lovely woman I spoke about earlier, Deanna, is an educator for Pravana, and I feel incredibly fortunate to learn from two exceptional teachers who have opened my eyes to the limitless possibilities for my future and the services I can offer.
When I started, I had a 12% rate of repeating clients in my first year, but that has now jumped to 29%. Our salon was voted the #1 local favorite in the Joshua, Burleson, and Crowley areas. Since then, we have been busy, but I’m always welcoming new clients. I cut curly and straight hair for men, women, and children, and I also offer a variety of custom color options. My ultimate goal in life is to make people feel seen, heard, and beautiful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely a struggle to avoid burnout while working from 7 AM to 11 PM, juggling school and my job. I was exhausted, and when I came home, the last thing I wanted to do was talk to my family, even though I am a very family-oriented person. It was a trying time, but it proved to be worth it because I could not be happier at the salon where I work. I could talk to my clients forever and never get tired. The moment I stepped into the salon for the first time, it felt like a match made in heaven.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I grew up with curly hair during a time when people didn’t know how to maintain or care for it, or what was good or bad for curly hair. Now, there is a greater demand for information for those with curly hair, and my main drive has been to teach people how to do those things and learn everything I possibly can. I am a lifelong student; I love to learn and explore new things. However, I also have an appreciation for old trends. When I was younger, I used to do the Farrah Fawcett blowout and all of the fun layers. I’ve been told that I am a very versatile person, and I always choose to take that as a compliment!
