Today we’d like to introduce you to Lachuné Boyd.
Hi Lachuné, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story begins in the low country of Sc and in particular inside a small country church. It’s typical for singers to have gotten their start inside of a religious space; however, what makes this so significant for me is I got to see art (something moving and beautiful) being experience simultaneously by a group of people. At that time, my voice wasn’t as good as my older siblings and other local singers. So, I spent a lot of time observing and singing in the background. Eventually, I got the chance to experience what it’s like to sing behind a microphone by myself.
I was encouraged to find songs that ministered to a local congregation and express the lyrics with lots of passion.
I learned so many lessons singing in church in my adolescent years. I learned style, improvisation, how to phrase, how to listen, etc.
When I think about my work now, the start of my story makes so much sense. I consider myself a vocal storyteller who also empowers other folks to find their voice, build confidence through singing lessons, and discover their own perspective with music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has been lots of success and many good times; however, the road has been far from easy. I’m in good company though. I think most of us who decide to do creative work and live by that work is often met with difficulty.
Of course, there are financial troubles and a lot of imposter syndrome. I remember the first time a good friend of mine suggested that I should teach. I thought he was joking. Who’s paying for voice lessons, and did I have anything to offer?
However, right after suggesting it, he asked, ” Do you not think your peers or people wouldn’t want to know how you’re able to do what you’re doing?”.
I wasn’t aware I had something to offer, and I wasn’t aware folks would pay money to learn how to sing!!! To be fair, I was raised in an extremely rural area, and success in my family was through agriculture, not music.
Now that I have my online voice studio and solid work for myself as a singer, the biggest struggle is reminding myself that the success I’ve experienced is not through luck.
Another challenge is not giving in to the pressure to appear to be busy. As a singer, there are a lot of different avenues you can have for yourself. Not forcing yourself to do things because it’s cool but rather because it’s something you find meaningful can be hard.
Finally, I had to trust that creativity and work isn’t going to run out. As long as I take care of myself and allow myself to have a full life, creativity will always be there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Every month I find myself wearing three different creative hats! I’m often juggling work as a Singer, Voice Teacher, and Portrait photographer.
So far this year I am most proud of ” Head to Heart” my online Voice Studio! I’ve had the privilege of working with singers from young to old and professional to beginners! I’ve helped supported singers entering into intense performance art programs and helped older age singers record their own records.
Helping others discover the power and beauty of their own instrument is part of my purpose.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I wish I knew failure was normal. I would advise anyone starting out to not overthink it but make it their first priority to find a mentor!
Most of all, work at your own pace and find the work that excites you. When folks discover your work make sure they find the work you WANT to create and be known for. Be authentic.
