Check Out Lawanda Crawford, MSN FNP-C

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawanda Crawford, MSN FNP-C

Hi Lawanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Professional, I have worked as a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner for 7 years. I have been in nursing for more than 25 years. I have held several mid-level and upper management leadership roles throughout my career. I have also worked at Magnet Designated hospitals such as Texas Health Resource and Baylor Scott & White systems. I started out as a certified medical assistant (CMA) shortly after high school. I completed my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas in Arlington. I hold a Masters degree in Nursing Leadership and Management and then fast forward to being a Nurse Practitioner. I’ve always held a passion for helping others. I come from a family of healthcare providers and service workers. There was no question while growing up in knowing what profession I wanted to pursue.
I am also a 6 years breast cancer survivor. As a breast cancer survivor, I’ve had a chance to reflect on how I can do my part in providing assistance to others affected by breast cancer and their caregivers. Often times, in certain communities of black and brown, we don’t get exposure to preventative care and other life saving tips until breast cancer as already touched our family. I want to be remembered by bringing improved awareness to communities that have been traditionally not been given the same opportunities to have access of knowledge that saves lives. Every year my family and I hold a breast cancer walk in the community I grew up in. October 15, 2024 we held our 5th annual. With each year we have evolved. We’re planting the seeds now for it continue to grow and hopefully one day be nationally recognized.
I have been featured on CBS Channel 11 and Sugar Mode Off sharing my journey. I’m grateful for the opportunity to use these two platforms in spreading awareness. My intent was for someone to hear my story and be compelled enough to schedule their mammogram screening and perform a self-breast examination. Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Detection saves lives. It SAVED mine! Watch my story and hear my journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge has been creating my medical scrub brand in becoming a household name in the healthcare world. Having an online business, I had to quickly learn how to navigate social media platforms like Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook. Being able to create content videos and reels can be challenging. I was blessed to find someone with the ability to manage those areas for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a NP, one of my biggest joy is providing my patients’ and their caregivers with a clear understanding of evidence-based healthcare to manage their current medical condition while educating them on preventative measures to improve their lifestyle. I take time for my patients and allow them to express their concerns. This is a distinctive part of my practice. I want everyone to feel valued and heard. I treat both chronic and acute conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and COPD. I believe that quality healthcare should be afforded to all.
Secondly, I’m the proud owner of an online apparel medical scrub company, Ccouture Scrubs, LLC. Being an entrepreneur had been a life-long dream of mine that grew into fruition. I’m excited to watch my business grow while providing comfortable and affordable scrubs you’d love to wear.

Lastly, I hold the distinct position of Vice-President of a 501(c)3 Sisters Network Dallas. Sisters Network Inc. is the only National African American breast cancer survivor organization. This organizations purpose is the save lives. We provide a service to breast cancer survivors through financial assistance, transportation to appointments, equipment rentals, community resources and emotional support. We also provide free mammogram screenings.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
With any part of my life, I move with intention and purpose. These characteristics perfectly describe my work ethics, and the values I pass on to my child and grandchildren. Accomplishments professional and personally are extensions from my faith in God and the core values in my life. I pray that my family legacy will follow in my footsteps with always putting God first in all their decision making and believing that being of service is an honor. I want them to also have a strong passion for learning.
With age comes wisdom and throughout my journey, I’ve learned the importance of self-care and spending quality time with my family. Being able to pray, relax and recharge, gives me the energy needed to accomplish my daily tasks and goals.
