Today we’d like to introduce you to Loli DiSanto.
Hi Loli, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my professional career as a Physician Assistant. I never intended on being an artist but the influences I had as a child, being a competitive figure skater with all the glitz and glamour and SPARKLE, must have penetrated my brain so much that I couldn’t leave it behind me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I try not to focus on anything that might be viewed as a struggle, obstacle, or roadblock; I view all of those things as opportunities to learn. I would say that I took a rather non-traditional way of getting to where I am, and that took quite a bit of time. From my previous profession as Physician Assistant to becoming a mom, I learned things like patience and skills with my hands that I can employ in my daily work now.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As many artists do, I tried my hand at every discipline; painting, jewelry making, photography, collage, even music. It was when I combined all of my skills and passions that I began making the egg sculptures that I have become known for. A modern-day version of a Faberge egg combined with the pop and sparkle of a Judith Leiber handbag. These pieces are unique in the way that you won’t see them mass-produced by the hundreds or thousands. They take an extreme amount of care, patience, and time to create, which makes them very special. I spend about one week’s time creating these from sketch to the last of the ten thousand or more stones placed.
Art is meant to provoke a reaction, conjure up a feeling, or start a conversation. It’s an incredible thing to hear a spectator gasp at first glance of one of my eggs or see looks of wonder as someone twirls one of them around in the light. I think the thing that sets my work apart from others is not only the media used, the texture but also the fabulousness! My work is not just art; it is jewelry for the home, but in a whimsical way…a definite conversation piece.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Persistence. 100%
There were many times I wanted to give up and go home when I was learning a new jump as a skater. I was bruised and cold and wet from falling hundreds of times, but I kept at it. Eventually, I landed the jump(s)…some took longer than others, but I got there!
The same was true when I went to school, college, grad school…you can’t give up when the going gets tough. Stick with it and eventually, you will get there!
