Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie Hughes.
MacKenzie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I worked in the photo specialty channel for over 20 years. First, in Redding, CA, at Crown Camera & then in Texas, with Fort Worth Camera + The Print Refinery. I was fortunate to have the freedom to launch projects like the Fort Worth Foto Fest (later Funkytown Focus) and an ambassador program that gained industry attention. After moving on, I knew the thing I was going to miss the most was the people: mainly inspiring others to do more with their cameras & images. Either by teaching or by imparting a sense of excitement or adventure through imagery.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nope: not smooth. Goodbyes are difficult, especially when you share a passion for photography and work with others in a camera store: you miss your co-workers and you miss your customers. The art of photography, so connective, personal & emotional. BUT, I suppose, the best cure for a goodbye is a hello. That’s why I started a new “club” to keep doing what I enjoy most: getting people “up” to create great memories through cool images, exciting experiences & crafting meaningful friendships. I’ve always said that taking pictures and playing with a camera is fun, but the real thrill is helping others and watching them create magic with their cameras.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Although I no longer own a retail storefront, I continue to be actively involved in the photography industry through my work with Imaging Spectrum in Plano. I present at conferences and consult with photo lab accounts across the country, providing resources for business development and ensuring they are well-equipped for success.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve found that luck is usually a result of your own actions.
However, I will say the luckiest I’ve ever been is when I met my wife….who also works in the photo industry. Not sure where I’d be without her.
