Today we’d like to introduce you to Marguerite Knowles.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Marguerite Knowles, and I am a 24-year-old artist from Dallas! I went to college in Scotland to study Art History and currently am getting my master’s in Art Business in London. My most popular products are my greeting cards, although I also create watercolour and acrylic paintings. My handmade watercolour greeting cards are sold at Needle in a Haystack on Preston Rd., Johnny Rodriguez Salon, and the Cooper Fitness Center Spa, as well as on my online Etsy store!
I started my small business at the end of high school, I had started acrylic painting a lot in my free time and realized I needed something to do with all my paintings, so I started my Etsy. During covid, I started creating greeting cards, which became my most popular product, and now they are my main focus.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely quite discouraging the first couple years, my acrylic paintings were not selling well enough for me to break even, and I was quite disheartened that I was spending so much time on my artwork and trying to promote on social media, but wasn’t seeing any results. Someone even suggested that I put my small business on pause for a few years to regroup, but I knew that I love painting so much that I would still be creating artwork in my free time, so might as well try to sell it! Shortly afterwards, I started creating greeting cards, and everything changed!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create handmade greeting cards with super cute motifs such as bunnies, mice, florals, and other animals! I am so proud that all of my cards are handmade by me with watercolor paint, ink, and most recently, glitter! I handle every stage of the process, from cutting and folding the cards to creation, quality check, and packaging. I also offer custom stationery and greeting cards!
Any big plans?
I am always creating new designs, so I’m currently excited about my new range of greeting cards which features a different font, new designs, and motifs, as well as new envelope colors! I am also hoping to be able to include a range of printed cards in the future, so that cards can be ordered in larger quantities than if they were handmade!
