Hi Maria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is María Carolina López, I am Venezuelan, I graduated as a lawyer in 2016 from the UBA (Venezuela). During these years outside my country, I have been able to take courses related to legal matters, such as how the laws work in the United States and new technologies and how they impact our daily lives, either positively or negatively, and that was when I thought about the idea of perhaps putting all this information together in the creation of a book for a better understanding of the subject, we know that AI is growing every day and seemingly without limits, this is when the questions come as a Society, who regulates AI? How does it affect the legal field or the decisions made through intelligent machines? Who has the legal responsibility when this machine fails? We know that AI presents many challenges at a legal level but also many opportunities regarding automated tasks, everything depends on the use we give it as a Society.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest thing has undoubtedly been being away from my homeland and customs, away from the family and friends I left behind to start building a new life from scratch, however you always meet wonderful people who become part of your life and many times they even open the way to many new opportunities, it has been gratifying to be able to see over the years the true country full of opportunities for everyone, that moment in which you reinvent yourself again and again, and you begin to shape the person you want to achieve to be, to be able to have the opportunity to be ourselves and decide how far we want to go.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m currently focusing on a project I’m working on related to AI, creating a platform specifically for lawyers and law students. A platform that will facilitate many of the tasks that currently take so much time. I’m proud to be working on this project and to have written my book, which discusses the pros and cons of AI and how it impacts our careers as lawyers.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something about me that many don’t know: I really enjoy going to museums and looking at art, understanding what’s behind every detail and every brushstroke.
