Check Out Mariel Zuniga’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariel Zuniga.

Hi Mariel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story with the piano began when I was just three years old in Costa Rica. Piano lessons quickly became a central part of my life. What started as lessons grew into a deep-seated passion—not just for playing, but for sharing the joy that music brings. This passion led me on a journey that brought me all the way to Fort Worth, in 2018 to pursue my master’s degree in music at Texas Christian University.

After graduation, I knew my dream job was to create a space where I could share that love of music. And that’s how The Creative Piano was born. My goal was simple: to offer high-quality piano lessons to both children and adults in a positive and encouraging environment. I believe that everyone, no matter their age, has the potential to develop their musical talent.

Seeing my piano students grow is the greatest reward. I’m so proud of their accomplishments, from winning awards at competitions to having invitations to perform at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. These moments are a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge has been navigating life as an immigrant, especially with my family so far away in Costa Rica. That distance became an immense struggle in 2022 when my dad suddenly passed away.

At the time, I was in the middle of my immigration process. My attorney advised me that leaving the U.S. to attend his funeral would jeopardize my entire case. It was a devastating decision to have to make. Not being able to travel and be with my family during that heartbreaking time was very difficult.

My dad and I shared a deep passion for music. We had so many similarities, and I knew in my heart that he would want me to stay and fulfill the dream I had been working toward. This experience solidified my commitment to my work and my studio, which I now see as a way to honor his memory and the love for music we shared.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At The Creative Piano, I offer high-quality piano lessons for both children and adults. I am known for creating a positive and supportive learning environment that helps students develop a genuine love for music.
What I’m most proud of is the passion of my students and the opportunities we create for them to share their talent. We hold several performance events throughout the year, including formal recitals at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Fort Worth. We also believe in using music to connect with our community, so my students perform at local retirement homes as part of our outreach events. These experiences not only help them build confidence but also teach them the power of giving back. Of course, their achievements, from winning competitions to being invited to perform at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.
What sets me apart from others is the belief that musical talent can be developed in everyone, and that the learning process should be a joyful one. I focus on nurturing each student’s unique potential, providing a solid foundation while also encouraging creativity and personal expression. This approach creates a strong connection between the student and the music, which is what ultimately leads to long-term success and a lifelong love for music.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
When it comes to finding a mentor or networking, my biggest piece of advice is to seek out organizations designed specifically to help entrepreneurs. For me, that has been SCORE.

SCORE provides free, expert mentoring and educational resources to help people start and grow their businesses. It was an invaluable resource for me. I received guidance on everything from setting up my business to tax planning and accounting. The mentors are experienced professionals who volunteer their time to help you succeed. It’s a fantastic way to get personalized, expert advice without the financial barriers that often come with business consulting.
